Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Calmar Community Methodist Church in Calmar, with Letha Rogers, interim pastor and Rev. Ed Meyer officiating. Music was provided by organist Alan Sensor and soloist Bob Martin. A poem was read by Phyllis Byerly. Brandt, Dean Byerly, Steve Sindelar and Eric VanZanten. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, with Chekal Funeral Home of Fort Atkinson handling arrangements. Vennie John Brandt was born June 24, 1915 in Lawler, the son of Charles W. and Mathilda (Kluss) Brandt. He moved as a young child to Fort Atkinson and attended and graduated from Fort Atkinson Public School. He married Catherine Marron May 15, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They purchased a grocery store in Fort Atkinson and ran that for a few years until they closed it while Vennie served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war they re-opened the store and ran it until 1954. Vennie then took a job for 23 years as a rural mail carrier for the Post Office, retiring in 1977. He also served the city of Fort Atkinson by serving as City Clerk for many years. He enjoyed fishing, camping, growing roses, bird watching and nature. Vennie Brandt was a member of the Calmar Community United Methodist Church and the Rural Letter Carriers Association. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Brandt, of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Elaine Sweet of Cedar Rapids and Sally and Francis "Smokey" Cronin of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren; foreign exchange student Ljeke and Eric VanZanten of the Netherlands; one brother, Harry and Edna Brandt of Salisbury, Md., and several nieces and nephews. Vennie John Brandt was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Kevin Sweet; four brothers: Lee, Roy, Jack and Richard Brandt and a brother in infancy, and one sister, Hazel Brandt.
