Description	:	Joe L. Seveik was born February 28, 1917 in Carroll Township, Tama County, Iowa. His parents were Joseph J. Sevcik and Frances (Zmolek) Seveik. He had three brothers, Adolph, Paul and Milo, and three sisters, Lillian (Wacha), Mary (Keller) and Philomena (Cibula). In 1924 the family moved to the Frank Seveik (Joe's grandfather) farm. Sevcik and Frances (Zmolek) Seveik. He had three brothers, Adolph, Paul and Milo, and three sisters, Lillian (Wacha), Mary (Keller) and Philomena (Cibula). In 1924 the family moved to the Frank Seveik (Joe's grandfather) farm. All the children attended Carroll No. 4, a one-room rural school. On March 1, 1942 Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army and served four years, two of which were served overseas in the South Pacific. In 1947 he started farming in Carroll Township on land rented from Anna Chalupnik. In 1949 he was married to Vera Kovarik, daughter of Charles and Martha (Balichek) Kovarik. She was born in Highland Township on March 11, 1924 and has a sister Minnie Kubik. In 1938 Vera went to live with her grandmother, Mrs. Joe Balichek, in Montour and attended school there until her grandmother's death February 19, 1940. Vera finished her education at the Toledo High School and graduated in 1942, then taught rural schools in Otter Creek and Carroll townships. Joe and Vera were married February 22, 1949 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama, Iowa. A wedding dance was held at the C.S.A. hall in Vining in the evening. The farm Joe and Vera purchased in the fall of 1949 and moved to in April, 1950 is located in Section 20 of Carroll Township. Known as the Fee place, it derived this name from earlier settlers, the Elias Fee family, who purchased the land in 1854. In 1961 the Sevcik's replaced the house built by the Fees with a split level home. Joe and Vera have seven children. The oldest three attended Carroll No. four (as did their father) until it was closed in 1961. All the children graduated from the South Tama County Community School District. Deborah Sue was born May 27, 1952. She graduated from Iowa State University. She married Martin Marriott from Granville, Iowa on November 20, 1976. Debbie is a high school science teacher employed in Des Moines. Gary Lee was born August 7, 1953. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He married Kathleen Murphy from Polk City, Iowa on August 30, 1986. Gary is a computer programmer for an insurance firm in Des Moines. Carla Jo was born September 15, 1955. She graduated from Marshalltown Community School of Nursing in 1976, and later received a degree in Health Arts from the College of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois. She married William Assell from Aurora, Illinois on August 26, 1978. They are the parents of Gregory William born February 28, 1982 and currently live in Memphis, Missouri. Michael Charles was born September 12, 1956. He joined the U.S. Army in 1974 and was assigned to the U.S. Army Band. He received his Bachelor's degree from Park College, Kansas City, Kansas and his Master's degree from the University of Southern California. He married Tamara Adams December 19, 1981. They are the parents of Matthew Charles born March 23, 1984. Michael is a U.S. Army Captain commanding an aviation company at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. Mark Joseph was born November 7, 1957. He graduated from Kirkwood Community College. He married Cynthia Huedepohl from Conroy, Iowa on June 16, 1984. Mark is employed as a computer operator in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Joseph Robert was born November 24, 1959. He graduated from Iowa State University. He received his Juris Doctor degree (Law) from University of Iowa and was admitted to the Iowa State Bar Association on June 13, 1986. Joe is employed as an attorney in Waterloo, Iowa. Camelia Ann was born March 28, 1961. She graduated from Marshalltown Community College with an Associate Degree of Nursing. She married Arlyn Johnson from York, Wisconsin on July 10, 1982. They are the parents of two children, Zacariah born May 23, 1984 and Samantha born July 8, 1985. Cammy is employed as a Registered Nurse in Marshalltown. In 1980 after raising their family and spending thirty years on the farm, Joe and Vera retired and moved to 1004 E. 7th Street, Tama, Iowa. by Vera Seveik Vera Ellen Kovarik Sevcik, 89, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 5-7 PM at the Funeral Home in Tama where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 PM and a Vigil Service will be held at 7 PM. Vera was born on March 11, 1924, to Charles and Martha (Balichek) Kovarik of Tama County, Iowa. Upon finishing high school, she taught for one year. After the war, Vera met Joe L. Sevcik at a community dance. They were married on February 22, 1949, and raised seven children on their farm north of Toledo. When Joe retired from farming, they moved to Tama. Vera was active in many aspects of the Tama County community. Besides involvement in St. Wenceslaus and St. Patrick's Catholic Churches, she was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and did volunteer work for the Tama County Democratic Party. Vera spent many hours researching at the Tama County Historical Society. She also enjoyed quilting, baking, gardening, canning, and celebrating her Czech heritage. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; infant son, Timothy; grandsons, Greg Assell and Robert Sevcik; sister, Minnie Kubik; and son-in-law, Bill Assell. Vera is survived by her children, Deborah (Marty) Marriott of Indianola, Gary (Kathy Murphy) Sevcik of Des Moines, Carla (Jerry Nichols) Assell of Centerville, Michael (Tamara) Sevcik of Leavenworth, KS, Mark (Cindy) Sevcik of Cedar Rapids, Joe R. (Lisa) Sevcik of Cedar Falls, and Cammy (Arnie) Johnson of Gallatin, TN. Also surviving are twenty-three grandchildren: Paul and Charlie Marriott; Andrew and Benjamin Sevcik; Christopher Assell; Matthew (Katie) Sevcik and Molly Sevcik; Joshua, Jessica, Nichole and Rachael Sevcik; David, Daniel, Joey, John Paul, Timothy and Brenda Sevcik; Zac (Sara) Johnson, Samantha (Omar Absar) Johnson, Hannah (Brad) Merritt, and Zadoc, Dudley and Shelby Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren.
