Description	:	Vera Irene (Stamp) Swanson was born at Yutan, Nebraska on July 27, 1920 to Lewis C. Stamp and Phoebe Ann (Phillips) Stamp. She passed away on January 20, 2012. She was baptized on September 5, 1920, by Rev. Rohwoldt and confirmed on April 14, 1935 by Rev. John Schrader at St. John Lutheran Church at Yutan. Vera attended rural school districts #35 and # 10 and in 1937 graduated from Yutan High School. She had received a 4 year scholarship to Kearney State College, where she always had dreams of attending, but due to the Depression, had to stay home... Read More	Vera Irene (Stamp) Swanson was born at Yutan, Nebraska on July 27, 1920 to Lewis C. Stamp and Phoebe Ann (Phillips) Stamp. She passed away on January 20, 2012. She was baptized on September 5, 1920, by Rev. Rohwoldt and confirmed on April 14, 1935 by Rev. John Schrader at St. John Lutheran Church at Yutan. Vera attended rural school districts #35 and # 10 and in 1937 graduated from Yutan High School. She had received a 4 year scholarship to Kearney State College, where she always had dreams of attending, but due to the Depression, had to stay home on the farm and help with the everyday chores. On May 16, 1942, she married Ned A. Swanson of Wahoo. When Ned went into the military service during World War II she visited him at various states, worked at a dry cleaners and performed secretarial work so she could be with him. She always cherished the fact that she made lasting friendships with several wives of the service men. After Ned was deployed to Europe with his medical unit, Vera enrolled in Boyles Business College in Omaha and studied Stenotyphy. After completing her studies, she became a court reporter in the Omaha courts. When her brothers-in-law, Drs. Roy and J.R. asked her if she would consider moving to Wahoo and work as their office manager, she decided Wahoo would be better than living in Omaha. She would be closer to her parents and could help with milking cows – by hand! After Ned returned from the war, they lived in Wahoo for several years and then, in 1948, moved to the District 70 community north of Wahoo. Their daughter, Roma Jean, was born in 1951. Vera taught Sunday School and Bible School at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She helped with dinners and banquets that the church ladies would prepare and serve. The older ladies were good teachers and Vera was eager to learn. While on the farm, Ned and Vera have cows and chickens. She churned her own butter and sold eggs. She had a large garden and canned many quarts of fruit and vegetables. They were happy to get a deep freezer and could freeze the garden produce. They always made homemade ice cream when all the Swanson families came to the farm for the 4th of July fireworks! Vera will be especially remembered for her whole wheat bread, cookies, rice pudding and Swedish rusks that she shared with friends. In 1975, they moved back to Wahoo due to Ned's failing health. At this time she was employed as a secretary for Hellstar Corporation in Wahoo and later served 5 years as Deputy Register of Deeds until she resigned to stay home and care for her husband. Vera was happy in her life as a homemaker and loved to entrain friends and family. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and always shared her beautiful roses with others. Vera was an accomplished seamstress and would often sew a dress for a needy person. She was an expert in making quilts and embroidery work and in later years kept herself busy with crocheting – giving more than 75 afghans to friends. She was an avid reader and also liked to read and write poetry. She was often asked to write poems for friends who were celebrating special occasions. Her grandson, Heath, was the light of her life. She loved attending his many school events and did so until he graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University. His friends were always welcome in her home. Vera enjoyed traveling and especially loved to go by car. She accompanied her daughter and family on many memorable trips. She kept a daily diary, from her school days until age 90 and delighted in the huge 90th birthday party her family gave for her at Starlite Ballroom! Vera and Ned had enjoyed going to dances for many years. Vera battled cancer and suffered a stroke. She felt that crocheting and sharing baking with friends was the therapy that helped her to meet each day. She always said that God would not give her more than she could handle. She put her complete trust in His Word. Her daughter, Roma, gave piano lessons in Vera's home and she became "Grandma" to many children through the years and they always enjoyed the special treat of Vera's homemade cookies. Vera was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Wahoo Coin Club, Life member of Saunders County Historical Society, the Saunders County Genealogy Society, Life member of VFW National Home for Children, a Past President and Life member of both the Wahoo American Legion Auxiliary #82 and the VFW Auxiliary #4502, St. David's Welsh Society of Nebraska, and at one time was active and held offices in the Republican Women's Organization of Nebraska. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Ned; son-in-law Kenneth J. Smith, parents Lewis and Phoebe Ann Stamp; sister and husband Genevieve and Waldo Christensen; and nephew, Lyle Lewis Christensen and wife Bettie. Vera was survived by her beloved family – daughter Roma J. Smith, grandson and wife Heath Kenneth and Jaclyn Smith, and great granddaughters Abigail Rose and McKenna Jean Smith.
