Jean was born November 17, 1933 at her uncle Albert Mundt’s farm west of Berea, NE to Alfred & Bessie (Mundt) Frost. She grew up on the Frost farm south of Hemingford, attending elementary school at Berea and Nonpareil District #29, and graduating from Alliance High class of 1951. She was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Alliance before her marriage to cattle rancher Ray Koch, son of Alvin & Elsie Koch, on July 6, 1954. Jean and Ray made their home in a sod cabin at the Koch family ranch in the Sandhills east of Ellsworth, NE. Shortly after their marriage, Jean was crowned State Queen of the Nebraska Flying Farmers and Ranchers. In addition to her ranch wife duties (some she loved, some notso-much) she still found the time and energy to birth and mother five daughters. Jean loved writing poetry, and she leaves behind a large portfolio of poems that she penned to honor friends and family. Jean often said she felt blessed that God had put so many people in her life to love and care for. She will be remembered for her easy smile, hearty laugh and her addiction to chocolate. She enjoyed many things but especially books, poetry, word puzzles, costume jewelry, and meeting new people. She was an incurable romantic and a product of post-war femininity: her daughters teased her (lovingly and often) about her application of fresh lipstick for even the smallest ranch errand. She will be remembered for her hugs — she hugged friends and strangers alike. In her last days of hospice, she came up with an idea for “freezer hugs.” Recipe: take a loved one’s hug and wrap it in a towel. Carefully roll up the towel and freeze it. Then on days when life gets too heavy, remove the towel from the freezer and drape it around your sad, weary shoulders. As it thaws, so will your tension and grief thaw, until all that remains is a warm, enveloping hug of solace. In 1986, after Jean survived a heart attack at the young age of 53, she and Ray purchased a motorhome and happily traveled to all 50 states plus Mexico and Canada. She often said her years traveling with Ray were some of the most enjoyable of her life. They were married 52 years before Ray’s passing in October 2006. Their union extended to 15 grandchildren,* 11 great-grandchildren*, and one great-great grandchild at the time of Jean’s death. In April 2009, Jean married Gene Lewis of Alliance, and the pair became known around town as the “pair of jeans.” With this marriage, Jean added 7 beloved step-children to her extended family, along with 17 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren. Gene Lewis passed in October 2013, but his family continued to include Jean in their lives, and this gave her great joy. In July 2015, Jean married Eugene Kleve of Alliance, adding three more step-children and 9 more step-grandchildren. Eugene passed in January 2016. Jean is survived by her sister Shirley Jeske of North Platte and Jean & Ray’s five daughters: Sue (Bill, now deceased) Roberts of Alliance; Joyce (Jim) Laughery of Billings, MT; Sandra (Randy-partner) Burtis, of Alliance; Kathy (Monty) Koehler of Saronville, NE; and Lesa (Derek) Schwanebeck of Ellsworth, NE. She leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren, plus many nieces, nephews and cousins, along with a total of 10 step-children, 26 step-grandchildren, and numerous step great-grandchildren. Among those who predeceased her were parents Alfred & Bessie Frost; an infant sister; her brothers and their wives Neal (Margaret) Frost, and Kenneth (Genevieve) Frost; her brother-in-law Paul (Shirley) Jeske; parents-in-law Alvin & Elsie Koch; her sisters-in-law and their husbands: Velda (John) Perrin and Emma Jean (Don) Sinclair. She loved spending time with friends at the Red Hats, the Alliance Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Council, the Knight Museum, the Alliance Library, several Alliance area churches and numerous other organizations. Jean and Ray’s Great Grandchildren as of April 2019: Anya Smith, Brendan West, Remington Lashley, Casey Lashley, Gabe Constantine, Madison Jones, Zeb Jones, Maddisyn Laughery, Ashlyn Nygaard, Konrad Koehler and Natalie Harmon.
