EVANS:" Vera Evans was born July 1, 1910 in Harrison County and when a baby moved with her parents John and Alice Major to a farm in Grove Township, Shelby County. Vera had two sisters, Evelyn Rose and Edith Rank both deceased, one brother Lawrence Major, Dunlap. Grove Township No. three is where Vera received her eight years of education, graduating from Dunlap High School in 1927. She attended college in summers and evenings while teaching at Grove No. 3, Kellogg School and the Dunlap Community School. It is interesting to note that John Major and his four children attended the same rural school for their first eight years of education. John's three daughters, Vera, Evelyn, Edith all taught in the same school. In 1933 Vera married Elmo Evans, Woodbine. They resided on a farm in Grove Township until ten years ago retiring and moving into Dunlap. Their children are Virginia (Mrs. John Harrington) Omaha, W. Co. Bluffs, Alice (Mrs. Leo Kenkel) Harlan. Mr. Evans passed away Nov. 9, 1978. His parents were Wm. and Glenny Evans of Woodbine. He had three sisters, Thelma Craig (deceased) Clara Glover, Winifred Graves, California. I recall walking a half mile to a one room school each day regardless of weather, carrying lunch pails. The building was always cold, close by the stove it was hot. Long logs fed the stove which had a "Drum" to circulate heat. Sometimes potatoes were baked in the "drum". Large cords of wood were stacked outside, also a shed full of cobs. Water had to be carried in a bucket from a nearby home. Two children were assigned this task. The "necessary" houses were on each corner of the yard. The typical building had three windows on each side. Many times it was too dark for reading. There were no lamps or electricity like we have today. The teacher was the janitor, building fires, sweeping, dusting. In spite of the inconveniences the "Country School" had a closeness and was like a big family. Everyone learned and helped each other. I'm a member of The First Congregational Church, a trustee, officer in the "Circle", been active in 4H, serve on various boards. My hobbies are reading, house plants, gardening and flowers. In July 1980 Dunlap hosted seventeen people from New Castle, England. I had two lovely ladies in my home. In June 1979 I traveled with "The Friendship Force" to San Jose, Costa Rica, spending ten days with a Spanish Family. In September 1979 I spent the month of September in California, attending the Los Angeles County Fair, the largest in the U. S. The summer of 1980 I toured nine Eastern States and Washington D. C. This trip really fulfilled my dreams. I'm enjoying my retirement, my family, friends, neighbors here at 1210 Remson St. in Dunlap, Iowa.
