Mrs. Jessup was born Nov. 19, 1910, in Yadkin County to Jesse Johnson and Lora Hobson Coram. She graduated from Boonville High School in May 1927, from Appalachian Normal School in 1929 and then taught grades one and two for one year in the Richmond Hill Community(1929-30). She... Read More	RALEIGH, NC ~ Longtime Boonville resident Vera Mabel Coram Jessup, 92, died at Raleigh Community Hospital in Raleigh Thursday, June 19, 2003. Mrs. Jessup was born Nov. 19, 1910, in Yadkin County to Jesse Johnson and Lora Hobson Coram. She graduated from Boonville High School in May 1927, from Appalachian Normal School in 1929 and then taught grades one and two for one year in the Richmond Hill Community(1929-30). Mrs. Jessup returned to Boone for further study at Appalachian State Teachers College in 1930-31 and completed her studies for her bachelor's degree in elementary education during summer school sessions. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in August 1934. She taught grades one through three in the community of Baltimore, N.C., from 1931 to 1935. Vera married Allan Jessup June 3, 1936. They met while students at Appalachian. She taught second grade at Boonville Elementary from 1935 to 1945. Vera took a five-year hiatus with the birth of a daughter, Rebecca Irene, and then resumed teaching at Boonville Elementary in 1951 and taught there until her retirement in 1973, for a total of 37 years in the classroom, 32 at Boonville Elementary School. Mrs. Jessup enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was very active in her church, Boonville Baptist, where she was a teacher in Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, Baptist Training Union and also was a choir member. She was also one of a few residents of Boonville who were involved in the planning and building of the Boonville Medical Center in order to bring a doctor and dentist to Boonville in the late 1950s. In addition, she was instrumental in building the first pharmacy and bringing the first pharmacist to Boonville around the same time. After retirement, she became an avid traveler, taking trips to Europe, Alaska, Mexico, Canada and other less distant destinations. Mrs. Jessup volunteered at the Habitat Store in Elkin and she enjoyed working in her garden and yard. She became a grandmother in 1983(age 73) when her much beloved grandson, Clay Allan Cline was born. With declining health, she moved to Raleigh in 1999 to be closer to her daughter. Mrs. Jessup was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allan Jessup, who died Feb. 6, 1955. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lora Hobson Coram and Jesse Johnson Coram; her brothers, John Ralph Coram and Fred J. Coram; and her sisters, Arlis Coram Jones and Frances Coram Jones. Mrs. Jessup is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Jessup Cline; son-in-law, C.H. "Buddy" Cline Jr.; and grandson, Clay Allan Cline, all of Raleigh. She is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Coram Mathis of Boonville and Irene Coram McLean of Raleigh; a brother, Richard Edward Coram of Cape Cartaret; nieces and nephews, Winanne Coram Brown, Mary Lynn Coram Vestal, Patricia Mathis Hemric, Brenda Mathis Adams, Elaine Mathis Poindexter, Walter Mathis, Phyllis Coram Ehardt, Alice Coram, Richard Coram, Jeannette McLean Johnson, Michael McLean, Judith Jones Stevens, Barbara Jones Archer, Susan Jones Baskin, Don Jones, Ed Corum, Belinda Corum Surratt and Beth Corum; and also many great-nieces and nephews and two great-great-nephews. Visitation with the Jessup family will be from 7 to 9 this evening, June 21, 2003, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. The funeral service for Mrs. Jessup will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Boonville Baptist Church. Interment will be at Boonville Cemetery.
