Description	:	Vera Mae Schacher, 89, of Columbus, Nebraska, was called to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at David Place Nursing Home in David City, Nebraska. The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 14 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy White officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Monday from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM at the church. Vera Mae Schacher was born June 22, 1923, to Joseph & Louise (Mueller) Schacher in rural Platte County. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on July 30, 1923, and confirmed her faith April 10, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, Nebraska. She attended the former District 55 School, two miles west of Monroe, called during its life span the "Sandhill University" through the 8th Grade. She was a lifelong resident of the Monroe/Genoa area until moving to an apartment in Columbus in 2004. Her entire life was spent in service to others, particularly caring for her parents in their home until her father's passing in 1964 and her mother's in 1980. Vera worked for several area neighbors through the years, cooking, cleaning and caring for children. She was known to stay with some of her nieces for a time after childbirth. She was a cook at Monroe Public Schools and cleaned the Bank of Monroe for many years. Vera had a long association with 4-H and Home Extension Club, serving in numerous leadership capacities at the local and county levels. In 1950, she and Mrs. Dan Ditter organized the Blue Belles 4-H club and she remained active with the group for more than 35 years. In November 1980, Vera was given the Meritorious Service Award at the annual Platte County Rural Recognition banquet and in February 1981, Miss Schacher was named Outstanding Layperson at the annual meeting of the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards in Lincoln. She was active in Trinity Ladies Aid. She enjoyed Bible Study led by Larry Pilakowski and playing dominoes with her friends at Westport Apartments. Vera showed her love through her baking and often provided gifts of baked goods to family and friends. Vera is survived by nephews: Duane Schacher, Edwin (Kathleen) Schacher, LeRoy (Donna) Ernst, Carroll Enzminger, Larry (Janelle) Schacher; Great nieces and nephews: Roger (Melanie) Ernst, Sherry (Matt) Boerkircher, Jody (Scott) Carlson, Jon (Amanda) Ernst, Mark (Crystal) Ernst, Mark (Sherri) Schacher, Tim (Diann) Schacher, Carla (Josh) Dahlberg, Steven Schacher, Troy (Nicole) Schacher, Lana (Robert) Kinghorn, Kevin (Denise) Koopman, Beth (John) VonSeggern, Rhonda (Mark) Sensibaugh, Brian (Amanda) Koopman, Alan Battles, Ann Battles, Lynn Muth, Sandy Enzminger, Terry (Lori) Borchers, Cindy (John) Steele, Pam (Jeff) Burnstein, Skip Fricke, Jerry (Sandy) Fricke, Fred (Grace) Fricke, Susan Fricke. She is also survived by many great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews and dear friends near and far. Vera was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Louise Schacher, brothers, sisters and their spouses: Rudy (Clara) Schacher, Erwin (Ethel) Schacher, Ida (Ben) Enzminger, Clara (Eugene) Ernst. Nieces: Marcie Fricke, Mickie Borchers, Arlene Koopman, Deloris Battles and great nephew Mike Schacher.
