Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Vernard Allen Rainey and Leafy King Rainey. She was the widow of Salvatore “Sonny” Gatano . Mrs. Gatano was retired after serving twenty years as a Public Information Officer with Vance Granville Community College. Before working at the community college, she was the Society Editor with the Henderson Daily Dispatch, for twenty years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, and was a member of the UMW Circle 4. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 3:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Fletcher. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens. Surviving are two daughters, Vicki G. Deal and Betty L. Gatano; one brother, John A. Rainey; three grandchildren, Christopher Catlett, Jake Hall (Jess), and Erica Deal. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn G. Catlett, and two sisters, Ruth Newman and Louise Lotz, and a son-in-law, Eric Deal. The family will receive friends Sunday, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church. All other times, they will be at the home of Vicki Deal. Serving as pall bearers will be Billy Newman, Bruce Newman, Bryce Newman, Bobby Newman, Tommy Frazier, Mike Rainey, Ray Rainey, and Kirby Aycock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, NC 27536. Arrangements are by Sossamon Funeral Home. Source - Sossamon Funeral Home
