Read More	Obituary from The Missoulian 10/30/2005: RONAN - Verda passed away on Monday, Oct. 24, 2005. She was born to Frank and Olive Lockwood in Kimball County, Neb., on June 22, 1916, and attended schools in Dix and Kimball. In 1933, she moved with her parents and 10 of her 15 siblings to Ronan, where she worked for various Mission Valley families. On Nov. 26, 1937, she married William T. Eckley in Havre. For many years she worked in their store which was first a radio repair shop, then an appliance and record store. When they closed their store, Verda began her own coffee and doughnut shop. Later on she worked for the Ronan Bakery and for Lucky Strike Lanes, but she continued to bake doughnuts for many different organizations and individuals. Verda was active in many community activities through the years. She was a hardworking member of the Methodist Church; the Order of Eastern Star, where she became a worthy grand matron; the Ronan Women's Club; the North Crow Flower Club; and the Ronan Booster Club. She was a Cub Scout den mother, mother adviser to the Order of Rainbow for Girls, a member of the Grand Cross of Colors and a 4-H leader. She was a volunteer at the grade school for many years and also volunteered weekly at St. Luke's Extended Care facility. She bowled on several league teams through the years and later participated in senior citizens bowling tournaments. She enlivened almost every Pioneer Days parade and children's parade in Ronan, both as an entrant and as an organizer. Parade watchers in Arlee and Charlo also saw her in her various costumes as did people attending Crazy Days in Ronan each year. Her sense of humor was widely known - there was always a good time when she was around. Schoolchildren and others were familiar with her Halloween "witch's laugh." Besides being "the town clown" and resident costume supplier, she enjoyed collecting spoons and butter knives and dolls, crocheting, making quilts and playing bunko and other card games. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, her parents, four sisters and seven brothers. She is survived by her children, Donna and Roger Fangsrud of Missoula, Cliff and Trudy Eckley of Kalispell, Lloyde and Joy Eckley of Lolo and Cori and Cru Creekmore of Deer Park, Wash.; grandchildren Sorine and Matthew McKee of Northern Ireland, Eric Fangsrud of Charlo, and Hope and John Weber, Ryan and Esther Eckley, Heather Eckley and Waylin Eckley, all of Kalispell, Heidi and Capt. Greg Hoffman of Osan, Korea, Chad and Allison Eckley and Shana and Jim Duffalo, all of Lolo and Brandy and Rob Gillespie of Missoula; six great-grandchildren; numerous special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her sisters and brothers, Don and Darlene Lockwood of Ronan, Audrey Koble of Charlo, Ruth Arlint of St. Ignatius and Richard and Mardell Lockwood of Missoula. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the old high school gym in Ronan. Graveside services will follow at the Ronan Cemetery and a reception will follow in the Ronan Elementary cafeteria. The family requests that memorials be made to the Ronan Booster Club or to an organization of the donor's choice.
