Verda Sadler Thomasson, 98 of Rison, died Friday, February 18, 2000, at her home. She resided in Rison for all but a few months of her long live. She was born on August 14, 1901, in a small frame house on South Main Street in Rison, Arkansas. Verda Lucille Sadler was the first-born child of John L. and Emma Sinclair Sadler. Both the Saddlers and Sinclair’s were early resident of Cleveland County. Other children born to John and Emma Sadler were Craig, Frances, Van and Willie Maude. Only Willie Maude Mays, a sister, of Rison, survives. Verda Sadler was married to V. O. Thomasson in 1920. They had two daughters: Ann, who died in early childhood and Peggy, who survives. Peggy is married to Dr. George L. Ackerman. They reside in Little Rock. Peggy and George have two daughters: Professor Susan Ackerman, a member of the faculty at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and Professor Laura Ackerman Smoller, a member of the faculty at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. She is married to Dr. Bruce Smoller, and they have two sons, Jason and Gabriel. Mrs. Thomasson is also survived by five nieces and nephews, Betty Sadler, of England, the of late Craig and Ethyl, John Elrod and Dr. Ben Elrod, the sons of the late Frances Sadler Elrod and Searcy Elrod, Shirley Elrod Morrison, the daughter of the lat Van and Elva Sadler, and Billy John Mays, the son of Willie Maude Sadler Mays and the late Raymond Mays. She is also survived by the children and grandchildren of these nieces and nephews, all of whom were dear to her, as were other relatives living and dead. Mrs. Thomasson was also devoted to her Thomasson nieces and nephews and their families and she was devoted to her friends and caretakers She was one of the oldest members of Rison United Methodist Church, and for many years she acknowledged memorials made to church. Great nephews will serve as active pallbearers and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, February 21, 2000, at the Rison United Methodist Church, conducted by Don Johnson. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Rison.
