Clarence was born May 4, 1925 on a farm northeast of Defiance to Nicholas and Mary Eckerman Kenkel. Nicholas was born in Westphalia Township southeast of Earling December 8, 1889. Read More	1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review CLARENCE AND DELLA KENKEL Clarence J. and Verdella C.R., who farm northwest of Defiance, were married August 20, 1955 at St. Mary's in Dow City. Clarence was born May 4, 1925 on a farm northeast of Defiance to Nicholas and Mary Eckerman Kenkel. Nicholas was born in Westphalia Township southeast of Earling December 8, 1889. Mary Eckerman was born February 18, 1892 on a farm north of Harlan. Mary kept house for her brother, Louis Eckermann, northeast of Defiance, until her marriage on November 27, 1919, to Nicholas after his return from the army. Clarence is the third child in a family of ten children. His brothers and sisters are: Francis, Helen Juelsgaard, Mildred Anderson, Eileen Rossi, Alice Buman, Donnie Neppl, Bob, Pat Sweetmafi and Nick Jr. Della, daughter of Quirin Edward Goeser and Magdalene Schneider Goeser, was born on July 18, 1929 on a farm by Westphalia. Quirifi was born March 6, 1888, and Magdalene (Lena) was born August 7, 1889, both on farms near Westphalia. Della's nine brothers and sisters are: Silvan, Vivafi Petersen, Dorothy Bray, Severifi (deceased), Corinne ViIs, Roman, Irma, Joseph (deceased), and Eugene (deceased). Clarence graduated from St. Paul's and farmed with his father on the same farm where he lives today. His father lived there until the summer of 1978. Della attended the Dow City Consolidated School and the University of Northern Iowa. She taught kindergarten for seven years in Crawford County before their marriage. Clarence is a charter member of the Shelby County Pork Producers and served two terms as president of the Cattlemen's Association; a 30-year member of the Farm Bureau, serving three terms as secretary; two terms as director of township; was on the Extension Council; 4-H Committee; member of the Holy Name Society, having served two years as an officer, and has been a member of the choir for many years. He has just completed a three year term on St. Michael's School Board and is 3 new member of St. Peter's Parish Council. He is a lector and song leader and minister of Communion. He also served a number of years as a CCD teacher . Della served on the Family Living Committee of Shelby County for a number of years, starting the Union Extension Club in 1958 while a member of the committee. She served three years on the parish council, holding the office of secretary; served on the Regional Pastoral Council; was president of the Council of Catholic Women from 1976-1978; was CCD teacher for a number of years; I.G.E. helper for the last three years St. Paul's School was open; and is a member of the Renovation Committee. She has been a choir member for many years and more recently a lector and song leader. She served as assistant leader, leader and sewing leader of the Defiance Masterettes from 1971 to 1980, Clarence and Della are members of the Liturgy Committee of the parish. Their children are: Mary Michele Flatt (November 6, 1956) of Des Moines, graduated from I.S.U. in May of 1979, married in June 1979. Kathryn Ann (August 7, 1958) graduated from I.S.U. in August 1981, was organist for St. Peter's while in high school. Andrew Joseph (June 8, 1961) attending I.S.U. Jeanne Marie and Jane Monica (August 26, 1963). Philip Joseph (June 23, 1966) and Peggy Jean (November 27, 1968). All of the children have been in 4-H, been members in the Defiance Soil Masters, Defiance Peppy Pals when the club was still in existence, Defiance Masterettes and the Horse Handlers. Andy was also a Cub Scout in the Defiance Pak #64 of which Della was Den Mother for one year. Andy and Jane accompanied the Harlan School Band when they attended the Austrian Music Festival in June of 1980. Jeanne will spend the school year of 1981-82 in Germany, attending school as a Youth For Understanding exchange student. Jane will attend Iowa Lakes Community College in the school of aviation. Jeanne and Peggy were active in the CCD program, serving as teacher and assistant. Phil was active in FFA during his freshman year. All the children attended St. Paul's until it closed with the exception of Peggy, who attended St. Michael's for three years. Phil and Peggy attend Harlan Community School.
