Vere Eugene Kelly was born August 18, 1916 in Ames, IA, the son of Hugh and Verlie (Pierce) Kelly. Growing up in Mason City with his seven siblings, Vere graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1935. Vere served his country in the United States Army in the 34th Infantry Division from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945. On January 21, 1961 he married the love of his life, Rose Amodeo in Des Moines at the St. Anthony Catholic Church. To this union two daughters were born, Gina and Lynda. Vere found work at Armour, where he worked as a time keeper until his retirement after 38 years of service. Vere and Rose were longtime members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Vere was a quiet, reserved gentleman. He enjoyed sharing memories and stories of his past. In his younger years, Vere loved to dance, constantly looking forward to trips to the Surf Ballroom with his wife, Rose. He and Rose enjoyed traveling during their retirement years, taking road trips around the country. Most of all, Vere took pride in his family, his lifelong quest for knowledge and his steadfast approach to living a long life. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Rose; daughters Gina M. (Randy) Price of South Carolina and Lynda A. (Paul) DiMarco of Waverly; grandchildren, Michael (Holly) DiMarco and Nicholas DiMarco and a step-grandchild, Huston (Courtney) Price and their son, Grant; brother, Larry (Jan) Kelly of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lois Kelly of Pensacola, FL; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Preceding him in death are his parents, Hugh and Verlie; sisters, Dorothy Sprinkle and Vivian Bell; and brothers, Parnell, Hugh, Robert “Bob” and Leland Kelly.
