"Vergie" (Cone) Wood, 92, of Winchester and formerly of Ashuelot, died Nov. 15, 2015, at Applewood Care Center in Winchester. She passed away peacefully while sleeping after a period of failing health. She was born in New Salem, Mass., May 21, 1923, daughter of the late Rosalie (Stone) and Raymond Cone. She was educated locally and graduated from Thayer High School in 1941. On Nov. 8, 1941, she exchanged vows with Cornelius "Connie" Wood with close family and friends in attendance. Sadly, he passed in February 2007 after 67 years of marriage. Mrs. Wood worked for 10 years as a secretary, performing various duties for the Holstein Association in Brattleboro. Previously, she had worked for the Winchester School Lunch Program, Woolworth's, National Grange Mutual Insurance, Peerless Insurance and Archie D. Jennings Insurance. She was a member of the United Church of Winchester, and was very active in the Ladies Society and Winchester Women's Club. She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Time was spent knitting and doing various crochet projects. She loved being a big part of family events which included playing cards and hosting family gatherings. She loved to bake, especially around the holidays. Once she decided to move to elderly housing, she became fast friends with many of the other residents and enjoyed spending time with them. Survivors include her two daughters; her granddaughter, and great-grandson, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Her son, Gary A., passed away in 1965. Her son-in-law, Edwin Harvey, and her brothers, Donald and Raymond, also died earlier. A service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the United Church of Winchester, 97 Main St., Winchester. Burial will follow in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery on Richmond Road, Winchester. All services are under the care of Cheshire Family Funeral and Crematories of Swanzey (www.cheshirefamilyfh.com). In keeping with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made payable to the Gary Wood Scholarship Fund, in care of Town of Winchester, 1 Richmond Road, Winchester 03470, attn: Financial Office; or to Activities Department, in care of Applewood Care Center, 9 Snow Road, Winchester 03470.
