CHURCH Funeral services were held Sunday at two o'clock at the Methodist church for Mrs. H.D. Hoppen, in charge of Rev. Otto M. Fabre. The scripture, “The First Psalm” was repeated in unison by the members of the Junior League, who attended the services in a body. A large group of the members of the Rebekah Lodge attended and at the close of the services manifested their last tribute to a departed sister. Many sorrowing friends who had gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased, were unable to get into the church. The beautiful floral offerings were also a taken of the esteem of the deceased. Interment was in the Harrison Cemetery. Verla Marguerite, daughter of Leonard and Grace Howard, was born September 27, 1909, in Madison county, Iowa, and died at her mother's home February 27, 1941, age 31 years and 5 months. Her rural school days were spent in Adair county, Iowa. She graduated from the Greenfield, Iowa, high school in 1926. May 14 of that year, she was united in marriage to Herschel Johnston, of Greenfield, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Herschel Wayne, age 13, and Wanda Lucille, age 11. They made their home in Greenfield, Iowa, and in Kansas City, Missouri, until February 15, 1934, when she and her two children came to make their home with her parents in Sioux county, where she has lived the past seven years. November 29, 1937, she was united in marriage to H.D. Hoppen of Blue Hill, Nebraska, and since that time had made her home in Harrison. She united with the Methodist church when fifteen years of age, and has since been faithful in the work of the church. The past few years she had charge of the Junior Epworth League and will be greatly missed by her little class. She was a member of the local Rebekah Lodge, and the past four years has enjoyed her work as chief clerk in the Sioux county agricultural conservation association office. Verla numbered her friends by her acquaintances and will be sadly missed by her family, her friends, and in her business and social work. She leaves to mourn her early passing her husband, H.D. Hoppen; two children, Herschel and Wanda Johnston; a step-daughter, Edith Hoppen; her mother, Mrs. L. F. Howard; two brothers, Virgil and Leslie Howard of Harrison; two sisters Mrs. Carl Engebretsen of Harrison and Ellen Howard, at home. Her father preceded her in death 10 months ago.
