Burial in the Ivy Hill Cemetery north of Malcom with military honors. Verlan Robert Tinkle was was the son of Alfred and Geneva Meldrem Tinkle. He was raised and educated in Brooklyn. "Shorty" honorably served in the US Army from 1954 until 1956. He was stationed in Ft Leonard Wood in Missouri and White Sands Army Base in New Mexico and Ft Riley in Kansas, respectively. He was married to Iva Tish on April 22, 1854 in Montezuma, Iowa. They made their home in the Malcom area and was blessed with four children, Steven, Gloria, Mike and Lyle. They raised livestock on the farm and Shorty worked for Cargill Nutrena Feeds and Van Wyk Freight Lines in Grinnell. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles and the Grinnell American Legion. Shorty was a proud family man who was very supportive of his children's and grandchildren's activities. He enjoyed attending figure 8 races, camping, traveling to the west coast to visit family, vacationing in Branson and attending the country music shows, taking naps in the afternoon, watching old western shows on TV, and cheering on his favorite wrestlers, Bulldog Bob Brown and Handsome Harley Race at WWF wrestling events.
