Read More	Verle Handy Verle Barton Handy, 84, of rural Ottumwa passed away September 3, 2018 at his home. He was born December 2, 1933 in rural Wapello County to Orien and Ethel Bull Handy. Verle chose his path in life early on, while growing up on the family farm north of Ottumwa. He was a graduate of Hedrick High School class of 1952. He married Norma Jeanne Butler on February 22, 1953 in Ottumwa and they spent their life together farming in rural Wapello and Mahaska counties. They moved to Fremont, IA in 1959 where they were active members of the Fremont United Methodist Church and had a close group of friends that would meet for card parties for over 50 years. They purchased a piece of land north of Ottumwa in 1965 where they built their forever home in 1971. Verle and Jeanne spent the next 40 years raising their kids and grandkids on their property. He taught his grandkids how to mow the expansive lawn to encourage a strong "work ethic". Farming was his passion and Verle was the first recipient of Wapello County's Outstanding Farmer Award in 1977. After earning his realtor's license, Verle and Jeanne purchased a Century 21 Realty franchise in 1984 that they owned and operated for over 15 years. This was to enhance their lifestyles and help improve the community of Ottumwa. Verle dedicated many volunteer hours to several causes including the Wapello and Mahaska County Farm Bureaus and the Wapello County Conservation Board. One of his most favorite accomplishments was the founding of the Pioneer Ridge Nature Area. He was very active in Wapello County's 4-H program serving as a leader while his kids were members and later enjoyed watching his grandchildren show at the 4-H Expo. Verle was passionate about the outdoors and was never happier than when he was boating or camping with his family. He was also an avid collector of milk bottles and enjoyed traveling to various flea markets. Verle is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of 65 years, and their four children, Terry (Kathy) Handy of Fremont, Myrna Smith of Ottumwa, Jeanette (Kevin) Jarvis of Cedar Falls and Craig (Deb) Handy of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren, Travis Handy, Denise (Jason) Ruiz, Megan (Josh) Pearson, Shawna (Eric) Manz, Nathan Anderson, and Brooke, Taylor and Jordan Handy; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Edeker of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Judy Butler of Granbury, TX; also nieces, nephews and extended cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Oswald and Edith Butler; 2 brothers-in-law, Darrell Edeker and Jim Butler. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fremont United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Voels officiating. Burial will be in McCormick Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be made to Fremont United Methodist Church or Pioneer Ridge Nature Area. Published on September 4, 2018
