He attended Douglas #1 through eighth grade and then attended high school in Newell, graduating in 1938. He entered the U.S. Air Force on October 5, 1942. He was in various training stations: Camp Dodge, Iowa; Miami Beach, Florida; Tarant, Texas; Moore Field, Texas, laredo, Texas; Englewood, California; Greensboro, North Carolina. Verlin went overseas on September 26, 1944 and served in China, India, Burma and in the Pacific as an airplane and engine mechanic. He received the good conduct medal and the distinguished unit badge and returned to the U.S. on February 2, 1946 with the rank of corporal, serving a total of forty months. On March 1, 1947 he was married to Inez Ann Paeper at the Newell United Methodist Church. They lived several places in the Newell area and then in 1950 they moved to their present home in Newell. He was employed at Fullerton Lumber Company; as manager for 20 years, then the yard closed and he started doing carpenter/contractor work with several area carpenter/contractors. In 1968 he started his own carpenter/contractor business until the present time, working with his brother Ivan Cressler. In 1993 the Cressler Ostrich Ranch was started with partners of Verlin and Inez Cressler, Barry and Orene Cressler and Randy and Jeanne Watts. Verlin was a member of the Newell United Methodist Church, Newell Fire Department for 39 years, American Legion, Lions Club, Trustee member of the church, and a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included gardening and flowers, ostrich ranching and working with the birds, and occasional camping trips with the family. Verlin was preceded in death by his son Terry Robert Cressler in 1966, his father Fred Cressler in 1974, his mother Nettie Cressler in 1974, his sister Gretchen Barr in 1980 and his brother Lucian Cressler in 1992.
