Born March 9, 1919 in Galestown, he was the son of the late Franklin P. Dukes and Blanche Trehearn Dukes. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a street car driver and then enlisted in the Navy where he was a training instructor in Bainbridge. Read More	EAST NEW MARKET — Verlon Ellwood Dukes Sr., 96, died Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Hospice At The Lake in Salisbury. Born March 9, 1919 in Galestown, he was the son of the late Franklin P. Dukes and Blanche Trehearn Dukes. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a street car driver and then enlisted in the Navy where he was a training instructor in Bainbridge. After the war, he drove a bus at night so he could attend barber school during the day. After completing barber school in 1953, he moved back to the Eastern Shore. For sixty years he owned and operated Skipjack Barber Shop in Cambridge and later worked part time out of his home until his retirement in 2014. He was a lifetime member of Choptank Lodge 138 AF&AM in East New Market, a 62 year member of Cambridge American Legion Post 91 in Cambridge; a 42 year member of First United Church in Secretary and later became a member of Chateau Community Church.He is survived by a son, Verlon E. Dukes Jr. and wife Judy of East New Market, a daughter, Nancy Ann Crow of Colorado City, TX; seven grandchildren: Verlon E. Dukes III, Kathy Wheeler and husband Steve, Corey Dukes, Jessica Savage, Julie Crow and companion Robert Mercado, David Crow and wife Melissa, Lori Camp and husband Dondy; eleven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline W. Dukes, who died April 12, 1991, seven brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 27, 2 p.m. at Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, where the family will receive one hour prior to the service. Rev. Emanuel Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow in East New Market Cemetery. Dennis Ewell, Billy Short, Leroy Abey, Wes Short, Raymond Johnson and Donald Cannon will serve as pallbearers.
