Description	:	Verlon Harrison Douglas Furstenau was born June 9, 1924, to Paul and Nell (Clocker) Furstenau at the family home near Neligh. Verlon passed away on April 8, 2017, at the Antelope Memorial Hospital, at the age of 92 years and 10 months. Verlon attended rural school in the Black Lake District No. 56 through the eighth grade. Read More	Verlon Harrison Douglas Furstenau was born June 9, 1924, to Paul and Nell (Clocker) Furstenau at the family home near Neligh. Verlon passed away on April 8, 2017, at the Antelope Memorial Hospital, at the age of 92 years and 10 months. Verlon attended rural school in the Black Lake District No. 56 through the eighth grade. He then attended ninth and tenth grade at the rural Willowdale High School. Verlon finished his high school education at Neligh High, graduating with the class of 1941. Verlon was inducted into the US Army in February, 1945 and was discharged in October, 1946. He spent his World War II time at Camp Hood Texas, Fort Lewis Washington and Manila in the Philippine Islands. In 1947, Verlon started farming east of Neligh where he spent his entire career and married life. He had spent many years helping the neighbors with their farming and livestock as he grew up and before he started his own career on the farm. Verlon worked part-time as a Field Supervisor for the ASCS government office in Antelope County for 30 years. He has been a member of the American Legion Post No. 170 in Tilden for over 50 years and was a lifetime member of the Legion. He served for many years as a member of the Color Guard for Post No. 170. Verlon was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Neligh. On May 21, 1950, Verlon married Nadene Peterson at Neligh. They were blessed with 56 years of marriage. To this union three children were born: Galen, Verlene and Leila Jan, who died in infancy. Verlon was also a proud grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of 23 and spent many hours with his family. In Verlon's younger years, he was an active pilot and a race car driver. He collected John Deere tractors and enjoyed working with wood and made many things for family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nadene; daughter, Leila Jan; his parents; brother, Junior Furstenau and sister, Dolly Hansen. survivors include his son, Galen and Debbie Furstenau; daughter, Verlene and Lynn Yates; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Shelly Furstenau, Paige, Chase, Kage and Reid; Simone and Eddie Lee, Shaylee, Jayda, Keegan and Kinzie; Cory and Jenny Furstenau, dylan, Tyler, Lane and Luke; Scott and Emily Yates, McKenna and Colby; Kara and Joshua Johnson, Natalie, Heather and Haley; Kent and Megan Furstenau, Ava., Ayden and Alayna; Brian and Anna Yates, Isabelle, Owen and Jacob; brothers, Bud and Rita Furstenau; Uen and Clarine Furstenau; sister, Nona Moon; brothers-in-law, Richard Peterson; Ken and Ruby Peterson and Keith and Kay Lou Peterson; many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services for Verlon were held on April 12, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Neligh. Pastor Janet Davis officiated, with burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Neligh.
