His early childhood was spent in O'Brien County where he attended Sutherland Consolidated School until 1929. The family then moved to LeGrand; Marshall County, Iowa and Verlyn attended the LeGrand Consolidated School until his graduation in 1936. Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * Verlyn Orlando Twedt was born on Sunday; February 11, 1917 on a farm near Primghar; O'Brien County, Iowa to Chester Thomas and Elvira Tjossem Twedt. His early childhood was spent in O'Brien County where he attended Sutherland Consolidated School until 1929. The family then moved to LeGrand; Marshall County, Iowa and Verlyn attended the LeGrand Consolidated School until his graduation in 1936. Following his graduation he attended Marshalltown Junior College. During this time his love for music resulted in the study of the accordion. For a few years he worked with his father on the farm both in LeGrand and then on the farm near Melbourne; Marshall County, Iowa. World War II came along and he went into the army. He first trained at Camp Wallace in Texas then to Holabrid Ordin and Plant in Baltimore; Baltimore City County, Maryland and then on to Camp David in North Carolina. At Fort Bliss the 113th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion with 90 mm guns was activated on Wednesday; February 10, 1943. Verlyn was in this group. The batalion departed New York on Friday; August 20, 1943 and the S.S. Monterey arrived in Oran, Africa on Thursday; September 2, 1943, and then on to Omaha Beach in France on Monday; October 23, 1944. His service was with heavy ordinance; taking him to the African and European theatres of operation where he received 3 combat stars and was mustered out of the army after four years with a rank of staff sergeant. Upon his returning home, he worked with his father on the farm and was active in the American Legion in Melbourne, Marshall County, Iowa where he served as chaplain. He married Lilyann Maxine Faircloth on Saturday; December 1, 1951. Soon after their marriage they moved off the farm and into Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa where he owned and operated a construction and backhoe service for some 20 years. After suffering five major heart attacks, he was forced to retire and in 1978 they moved to the warmer climate of Florida for his health. Maxine, his wife, worked at various jobs since their move to Florida and Verlyn kept the home fires burning. They have an adopted son: Kevin Eugene Twedt who now resides in Houston; Harris County, Texas.
