Description	:	From "From There To Here" Vernie Lost His Leg (June 1929) Vernie and Bill were trying out an old Titan tractor and three-bottom plow, on a piece of wet land that they intended to plant into silo corn. As I recall, they had spread a heavy coat of manure on the ground. As a result, the plow would clog up from more trash than could go under the frame and the beams of the old plow. The explanation of this accident was that the plow clogged up, and the tractor was starting to dig in. Vernie was on his knees behind the tractor, trying to uncouple the hitch from the drawbar. Bill was trying to move the tractor forward or back, as Vernie directed, and in some manner, Vernie's left leg was caught by the cleat lugs. He was yanked under the tractor, resulting in a badly crushed leg, a head injury and other bruises. The miracle is that he was not killed outright. The doctors thought they might be able to save the leg but the lower leg was badly lacerated. In just a few days a gas bacillus infection developed, and amputation was necessary to save his life. But that was not the end of the trouble. The infection spread, and several more operations were preformed, resulting in the loss of his entire left leg.
