Vern Gerald Svoboda was born October 6, 1928, in Mount Vernon, the son of Joseph and Grace (Ruble) Svoboda. He was educated in Illinois and Iowa. When he was stricken with spinal meningitis, his formal education ended but he never let his illness slow him down. He married Alberta Joyce Clifton on August 25, 1950, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1951, and proudly served in Korea during the war and was honorably discharged in July 1953 as Sergeant First Class of the Motor Pool. He and Alberta farmed in the Mechanicsville and Stanwood areas, until moving in 1962 to the Heritage Farm three miles northwest of Mechanicsville. He then sold Pioneer Seed Corn for 22 years. He and Alberta traveled around the United States and Europe with family and friends, to include trips to New York City, Maine, Montana, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, London, Scotland and Paris. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Alberta; two daughters, Joy (Al) Root of Pleasant Hill, and Sally (Joe) Hunt of Mechanicsville; one son, Wayne (Marla) Svoboda of Brooklyn Heights, New York; five grandchildren, Katie Wooster, Kevin Root, Krisanna Sternquist, Brady Hunt and Tyler Hunt; one great-grandchild, Jordan Hunt; and one sister-in-law, Arlene Svoboda of Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his twin brother, Glen Svododa and brother, Charles Svoboda, one sister, Marian Thiher, and one niece, Inis Huffman. Fry Funeral Home
