Callahan, 62, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Gothenburg. Callahan had been employed for the past 21 years in the custodial and building maintenance department of the Gothenburg Public Schools, where he was head custodian. Prior to his employment with the school, he had worked for 12 years for the Thirty Mile Canal Co. He was born March 9, 1915 in Hershey. H was united in marriage with Virginia ?* on Oct. 17, 1937, in North Platte. They lived in North Platte for about five years and then moved to a farm near Gothenburg. After farming a short time, he went to work for the Thirty Mile Canal Co. Services for Callahan were conducted Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, under the direction of the Rev. Lisle E. Mewmaw. Music was provided by Gothenburg High School students and Mrs. Robert Raymond, with Mrs. Harry Ostergard as organist. Casket bearers were Earl Wheeler, Virgil Iler, Jim West, Phil Grabouski, Jim Grabouski, and John Grabouski. Interment was in the Gothenburg Cemetery. Survivors include: his wife, Virginia; sons, Vern H. "Bud," Callahan and Jay Callahan, both of Lincoln; one brother, Harry Callahan of Holdrege; and three sisters, Mrs. Eldon (Ruby) Price of Cozad, Mrs. Lee (Ada) Newby of Sequim, Wash., and Mrs Ray (Ina) Roberts of Maxwell. *(unclear, could be Harlan or Hadan?)
