Ostdiek on Monday, October 27, 2008 at the St. Stephen Catholic Church of Lawrence. Mr. Ostdiek had died on October 23, 2008 in Nelson, Nebraska, following a protracted battle with cancer. The Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated by five priests: Rev. pastor, Father Loras Grell being the principal celebrant. Assisting with the funeral service were Ruth Krusemark as organist and Sheryl Buescher as Song Leader. Father Kubat was the Reader. Pallbearers for their uncle were: Brian Buescher, Evan Herbek, Ethan Herbek, Corey Ostdiek, Michael Ostdiek, Thomas Ostdiek, John Ostdiek, Shane Ostdiek. Interment was in the St. Stephen parish cemetery near the church. Vern was born September 30, 1953 to Irene (Schroer) and Herman Ostdiek in Nelson, NE. He was raised on a farm south of Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1971. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison, KS graduating with his BA in physics and mathematics in 1975. Vern continued his education at the University of Illinois - UC obtaining his MS in Physics in 1977. Vern returned to the Lawrence area for a short time before being offered the position of Assistant Professor at Benedictine College in 1978. In 1990 Vern took a leave of absence from teaching to obtain his Ph.D in Atmospheric Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder graduating in 1995. He returned to Benedictine College as Associate Professor and remained on staff there until his retirement in 2008. Vern co-authored the college level textbook "Inquiry into Physics" with Donald J. Bord which was released in 1987. The sixth edition of this textbook was released in March, 2007 just four months before he was diagnosed with brain cancer. By 1999 this book became the second most popular text of its kind in the country. Vern contributed to a publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research titled "Visible Spectra and Chromaticity of Noctilucent Clouds" in 1993 as well as two publications in the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences titled: "Deformation Frontogenesis: Observation and Theory" in 1995 and "A Dynamic Trio: Inertial Oscillation, Deformation Frontogenesis and the Ekman-Taylor Boundary Layer" in 1997. He also did several Research Presentations across the United States. Vern had a passion for hang gliding having done so from Kansas, Colorado and California to his favorite site, the French Alps. He was a long distance bicyclist and climbed the Tour De France trail in the French Alps a number of times. He also was an amateur photographer. Vern was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include 4 brothers: John, Ed and wife Linda, Ray and wife Lois all from Lawrence, Frank and wife Helen of David City; 2 sisters Marge Buescher and husband Craig and Marie Herbek and husband Ron of Deweese; several nieces and nephews and his family of friends in Atchison.
