He was born on September 4, 1931 in Holyoke to William Lonson and Edna Inez Rowe Hayes. He was raised on a farm in north Yuma County and completed the elementary grades at nearby Cement School. He graduated from high school in Holyoke in 1949. He was married to LaDonna Irene Book in 1951. To this union three children were born, Deborah, Steve and Terri. Vern and LaDonna divorced in 1968. Vern farmed the family farm, adding his own land to the original and improved all with some of the first self-propelled irrigation systems of the area starting in the early 1960s. Besides farming, he built a fat cattle feedlot, finishing hundreds for the market every year. He married Rosie Bergner and lived and farmed in Yuma County until their divorce in 1973. He attempted to retire and he sold his farm equipment and the cattle in Colorado. Unable to stand to be completely idle, he bought a cattle ranch in Hickory County, Missouri and moved there, renting out the Colorado property. Vern married Edna M. Taylor and they made their home and continued to raise cattle in the Wheatland area until her death in 1983. In mid 1999 he did retire, selling the cattle and the land. He moved to New Mexico briefly, but ill health caused him to move back to Wheatland, closer to his friends and the doctors familiar with his condition. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna Hayes; wife Edna M. Hayes; and granddaughter Ashley Rober. Vern is survived by his long-time companion Jo Ann Gilbert; three children Deborah Callaway and her husband David of Hillsboro, Oregon, Steve Hayes and his wife Ronda of Holyoke and Terri Grenz and her husband Don of Fort Collins; brother Gaylen Hayes of Brighton; grandchildren Stephanie Sheedy of Canandaigua, New York, Amy Rober of Arvada, Lucas Hayes of Fort Collins, Jennifer Hayes of Greeley, Lincoln Hayes of Holyoke, Erin Grenz of Kearney, Nebraska and Travis Grenz of Fort Collins; great granddaughter Michaela Sheedy of Canandaigua, New York; and niece Kelly Usher of Thornton. Memorial services were held Wednesday, November 14 at Hathaway with Rev. Kent Parson officiating. Inurnment will be at Holyoke Cemetery at a later date.
