Description	:	Centurion, Vern Ray Jones, 101, of Stromsburg, formerly of Hordville, Polk and Central City areas, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Vern was born on Dec. 23, 1909, in Hamilton County to Alfred and Dora (Rydsen) Jones. Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, son, Larry Jones, and daughter, Janice Widga. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Howard Romsdal of Bradshaw and Marilyn and Daniel Beber of York; 17 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, Leonard Beetem of Central City. Vern was born on Dec. 23, 1909, in Hamilton County to Alfred and Dora (Rydsen) Jones. Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, son, Larry Jones, and daughter, Janice Widga. Verrn grew up in the Hordville area and received his education at rural Hamilton County Schools. On July 29, 1933, Vern Jones and Edna Mae Beetem were united in marriage. Vern worked for one year on a thrashing crew and then began farming. He farmed in the Hordville, Polk, and Central City areas. For 10 years, he managed the Produce Store in Polk and he managed the Dinsdale Elevator and Feed for 15 years. He retired in 1975, but continued working by hauling fertilizer and mowing. Vern moved to Swede Haven in Stromsburg in 1996 and lived there until 2003. Edna died on May 26, 2000. In 2003, Vern moved to the Hearthstone in York and was living at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg at the time of his death. Vern is a member of the First Baptist Church in Hordville and served on the church board. He served on the Polk City Board and the Lindale Cemetery Board. Vern has been a member of the Polk and Clarks Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and is also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 321. Vern's greatest love was for his family and his work; but he also enjoyed fishing and golfing. Those also that have preceded Vern in death are grandsons, Mark Goertzen and Steve Jones; great-grandson, Brandon Widga; brothers, Wilbur and Elner Jones and infant Herbert Jones; fsisters, Edna Sundburg, Vernie Quick, Berniece Jones, and Esther Erickson.
