She was born on July 28, 1912 at Mechanicsville, the daughter of George and Cora Smith Moir and received her education at Mechanicsville where she graduated from high school in 1930. Verna then attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls. Verna married Martin Carstensen in 1937 and the couple made their home in Wyoming. She was born on July 28, 1912 at Mechanicsville, the daughter of George and Cora Smith Moir and received her education at Mechanicsville where she graduated from high school in 1930. Verna then attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls. Verna married Martin Carstensen in 1937 and the couple made their home in Wyoming. After Martin's death in 1960, Verna moved to Anamosa. In 1978 she returned to Wyoming where she lived until her last illness. Verna worked at several businesses in Wyoming and Anamosa, retiring from Anamosa Ben Franklin Store in 1978. She was a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church. Her favorite pastime was playing cards. She is survived by one son, Donald and his wife, Diane of Wyoming; one daughter, Janet and her husband, Donald Stevens of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held 11:00 Monday morning, March 23 at the Wyoming United Methodist Church with burial in Wyoming Cemetery. The Rev. James Davis officiated. Casket bearers were Dennis Carstensen, Daryl Carstensen, Paul Thomsen, Gordon Thomsen, Tom Paulsen and August Paulsen.
