Verna Esther Elizabeth (Schwandt) Stoehr, daughter of William and Rosa (Mueller) Schwandt was born on December 10, 1918, in Alban Township, Grant County, South Dakota. She was baptized on January 12, 1919, and confirmed on July 2, 1933, by Rev. Hartman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alban Township, Grant County, South Dakota. Her confirmation verse was John 10: 27-28. She went to rural country school Big Stone District #4, until the 8th grade and then attended Ortonville High School, graduating in 1938. While attending high school she lived in Ortonville performing domestic work in various homes and later worked at Big Stone Sweet Corn Factory. On June 9, 1939, she was united in marriage to Raymond Henry Stoehr at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Alban Township, Grant County, South Dakota. They lived and farmed in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota along the State Line Road, five miles south of Ortonville. They were blessed with three children: Roger, Rosalyn, and Cheryl. Raymond passed away on May 31, 1998. A year later, Verna sold the farm and lived in Ortonville, MN, eventually becoming a resident of Fairway View Assisted Living, and then of Fairway View Neighborhood, Harvest Trail. Verna served the Lord while she was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and later at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville. She was faithful in worship attendance and active in church activities including Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Ladies Aid, Sarah Circle, Helping Hands, Women of Trinity, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and attended Bible Class. Verna was a homemaker who worked alongside her husband, Ray, on the farm helping raise chickens and cattle while gardening vegetables and flowers. Her hobbies included sewing, crafts, needlework, embroidery, canning fruits and vegetables, baking bread, and making the best caramel cinnamon rolls. She was also a member of Chat n’ Do Extension Club, and a leader for Junior Busy Bees 4-H Club in Grant County where she mentored young girls in sewing, baking and cooking. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting with family and friends, attending family reunions, and entertaining and hosting many dinners. Cherishing her memory are her daughters: Rosalyn (David) Lundell of Tucson, AZ; Cheryl (Gary) Alberts of Ham Lake, MN; five granddaughters: Laura Alberts, Kristen (John) Novak, Dr. Karrin (Rich Graves) Stoehr, Sarah (James) Byerley, and Elizabeth (Daniel) Mordicai; six great-grandsons: Jack, George, Noah, Sam, Joshua and Matthew. Verna is also survived by sisters: Alice Holtquist, Milbank, SD; Ethel Anderson, Brainerd, MN; Evelyn Henderson, Lincoln, NE; and sister-in-law, Kaye Schwandt of Washington D.C.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband of 58 years, Ray; son and daughter-in-law: Rev. Roger and Lois; brothers: Roland Schwandt, Alvin Schwandt, Earl Schwandt, and Herbert Schwandt; and sister, Elvera Cooper. Memorials may be made to the St. John’s Cemetery Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church or charity of choice. - Mundwiler Funeral Home
