Interment was in the Salem Cemetery in rural Kearney County, Nebraska following the services. Verna Lee (Todd) Falk, 90 years of age, of Holdrege, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Verna was born on July 8, 1925 in Blackwell, Oklahoma, the sixth of seven children born to John Eben and Gertrude Latrisha (Osborne) Todd. Verna received her education in Coffeyville, Kansas. In later years, she continued to further her education at Kearney State College. Verna worked as a singer with the KGGF radio station in Coffeyville, Kansas, and also sang with a band on Saturday nights. Verna had a love for music and enjoyed sharing her talents by singing. In 1941, she was united in marriage to Paul Haussermann and to this union four sons were born: Robert, Gary, Donald and Jimmy. After Paul’s discharge from the service, the couple engaged in farming south of Stamford. She enjoyed helping raise their sons, encouraging them in 4-H, sports, church and school. Verna Lee also enjoyed working side-by-side on the farm with Paul, helping with the cattle and driving tractors. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford for several years, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and was active in the church choir. In the years to come, Verna Lee also worked as a nurse’s aide distributing medication at the Walker Post Manor Nursing Home in Oxford, Nebraska. On January 27, 1990, she was united in marriage to Charles M. Falk at the Salem Church in rural Axtell, Nebraska. After moving to Holdrege, Verna Lee worked as the Director at the Phelps County Senior Center in Holdrege for 27 years. This position at the Senior Center was her passion in life, and she was instrumental in the expansion of the Center, which included satellite centers in the county. Verna Lee also enjoyed providing travel opportunities for the senior citizens at the Center as she planned many trips anywhere from Prince Edward Island, Canada, to Estes Park, Colorado. This love of travel also carried over to her and Charles’ life together, which included special trips to visit their children and grandchildren. On September 9, 2011 she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles. Verna Lee was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, was honored by Governor Mike Johanns as an Admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska, she was also recognized by the South Central Nebraska Area Agency on Aging for 25 years of dedicated service to Nebraska’s older population. For many years, Verna Lee worked closely with many politicians to improve the life of senior citizens. Besides her two husbands and her parents; she was preceded in death by two sons: Jimmy Dean Haussermann and Donald Paul Haussermann; one grandson, Andy Hausserman; and four sisters and two brothers. She leaves to celebrate her life; her two sons: Dr. Robert Hausserman and his wife, Carol of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Gary Haussermann and his wife, Cherlyn of Central City, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. A memorial has been established in Verna Lee’s honor and will be designated at a later date. Expressions of caring and kindness can be sent to the family at www.nelsonbauerfh.com.
