She died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, as a result of a car accident near Bristol. Verna L. Schmidtgall was born Feb. 26, 1939, to Wilhelm C. and Catherine (Schilling) Schmidtgall in Lowry. She attended country school. After country schooling, she worked on the family farm and later at the Bowdle Hospital as a nurse's aide. She married Edward Mehlhaff on Oct. 18, 1963, in Bowdle. They made their home in Aberdeen. She was employed by St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse's aide, a surgical prep aide and as a dietary aide. She then worked for Norwest Bank for about seven years and later at Sheldahl's until it closed its operations. She then worked for Avera Mother Joseph Manor and Davis Courts in Aberdeen. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Altar Guild and in a church circle. Survivors include her husband of Aberdeen; one son, Wayne Mehlhaff of Aberdeen; one daughter, Veronica (Sean) Wahl of Barnesville, Minn.; two brothers, Duane Schmidtgall of Selby, and Harold Schmidtgall of Giltner, Neb.; three sisters, Irene Schlecht, Bernice Schlecht and Adeline Brown, all of Bowdle; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Casketbearers will be Ron Brown, Mark Schlecht, Claude Olson, Jim Schlecht, Pete Hesla and Randy Schlecht.
