Description	:	Verna Louise Sloan, 91, of rural Eldon, died in the hospice room of Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield at 3:50 am Thursday, March 24, 2011. Verna was born to Fred and Lulu Pirtle Melvin on Oct. 10, 1919, in Savannah, Iowa. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1938. She married Harley Sloan on July 16, 1938, in Bloomfield. Verna and Harley farmed near Eldon their entire lives. Harley preceded her in death on June 16, 2009. Verna was born to Fred and Lulu Pirtle Melvin on Oct. 10, 1919, in Savannah, Iowa. She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1938. She married Harley Sloan on July 16, 1938, in Bloomfield. Verna and Harley farmed near Eldon their entire lives. Harley preceded her in death on June 16, 2009. She was member of Eldon Christian Church and had belonged to Oakdale Club and Lioness Club in Eldon. Verna was a resident of the Bloomfield Care Center for the past three years. Surviving her are two sons, Jerry, his wife, Bev and Jim Sloan, both of Eldon; one granddaughter, Lisa Sloan Nordyke and her husband, Danny; one grandson, Kevin Sloan and his wife Tiffany; and four great-granddaughters, Alissabeth, Allison, Lauren and Carly Sloan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley; her parents; sister, Hazel Small; and two brothers, James and Denzel Melvin. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at Eldon Christian Church with Pastor Joshua Gordon officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, rural Floris. Visitation will open at 3 pm Friday at the church with the family present 6-7:30 pm. Memorials to the Eldon Christian Church may be brought to the church. Arrangements are in the care of Pedrick Funeral Home of Keosauqua.
