Description	:	Born at 34164 County Highway D35, near Steamboat Rock, Iowa, she was the 4th child and only daughter born to Louis Luiken & Kate Tholen. They moved to a different farm when Verna was a year old. Her father died when she was 11. She worked at the Steamboat Rock School, where she had graduated from in 1938, and later at Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, until she retired in 1984. Read More	Born at 34164 County Highway D35, near Steamboat Rock, Iowa, she was the 4th child and only daughter born to Louis Luiken & Kate Tholen. They moved to a different farm when Verna was a year old. Her father died when she was 11. She worked at the Steamboat Rock School, where she had graduated from in 1938, and later at Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, until she retired in 1984. She was employed as a cook, secretary, and bookkeeper at her various jobs. She was employed as a secretary at the Steamboat Rock school for a time, as a late 1960's graduate informed me. Although she never married, she had many nieces and nephews. She had a host of friends, but sadly, outlived many of them. Her brothers also passed away, at a relatively young age. Verna died at Valley View of natural causes. She had been happy to return to her old workplace in August 2002, when she fell and hurt herself, as she knew that some of her former coworkers were there to help her. She remained there due to her slowly declining health. She suffered from macular degeneration, so was unable to read very well the last few years of her life. This upset her greatly, as she always seemed to be an avid reader, much like myself.
