Verna Marie Williams Akery, daughter of Frank and Nina Shook Williams, was born on July 17, 1911, on a farm near Montezuma, Iowa and died Friday, December 6, 1996, in the Senior Home in Montezuma.. Verna received her education in a rural school near Montezuma and the Montezuma High School graduating from high school in 1930. Following graduation from high school Verna worked in Des Monies. On October 15th, 1937, she was married to Dan P. Akery in Montezuma. They made their home in Brooklyn. Verna worked at the hot lunch program at BGM schools and worked as a waitress at various local restaurants including Jim and Mary's. Mrs. Akery was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn. In the year 1930, she was Miss Montezuma. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Wayne Davis of Lovilia, and Carol and Dale Van Tome of Guernsey; two sons and their wives, Richard "Butch" and Connie Akery of Blairstown and Pat and Jackie Akery of Brooklyn; one brother, Harold Williams of New Sharon; one sister, Doris Raisch of Urbandale; her good friend and companion, Homer Ryan of Brooklyn; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died October 14, 1973; an infant son, Thomas Frank Akery; two brothers, Francis and Raymond Williams; and one grandson, Dan Akery.
