Verne was born on December 14, 1931 to Hugh Sweaney and Vergie (Ramsey) Sweaney in Cedar Vale, Kansas. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School. Verne was born on December 14, 1931 to Hugh Sweaney and Vergie (Ramsey) Sweaney in Cedar Vale, Kansas. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School. After High school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until he was honorably discharged. He later graduated from Pittsburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. On February 12, 1955 he married Juanell M. Carter in Cedar Vale, Kansas. The made their home in Cedar Vale for many years where Verne worked for the USPS as a rural mail carrier from April, 1963 until his retirement in April of 1993. After retiring, he was a bus driver for USD #285 in Cedar Vale and worked on his farm. Verne was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale, Kansas. He was a member of the Cedar Vale Lions Club for over 50 years; He was a member of the County Liner Music Group for 15 years; he was a Chautauqua County Commissioner for 12 years and also had his private pilot license; he was a member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association. Verne is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Juanell Sweaney of the home in Baxter Springs, Kansas; one son, Craig Sweaney and wife Jodi of Baxter Springs, Kansas; three daughters, Cindy Call and husband Keith of Udall, Kansas, Judy Ochs and husband Richard of Park City, Kansas, and Jane Stout and husband Marty of Cedar Vale, Kansas; Grandchildren, Josh and Terra Sweaney, Abbey and Josh Ames, Mandy and Michael Bredehoft, Holly and Philip Ingram, Jill and John Walrod, Justin Ochs, Karey Stout, Kyle Stout, Kip Stout, and Miranda Stout; 15 great-grandchildren and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother. Church Services will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale with Pastor Steven Bearden officiating. Burial will follow at the Cedar Vale Cemetery. The family asks for the casket to be closed and no formal visitation until services at the Church. The family has suggested memorials to the Cedar Vale/Dexter School Shooting Club and donations may be left in c/o Joyce Littrell, 300 River Road, Cedar Vale, Kansas 67024.
