Glenn Carr, former pastor of the Church of the Brethren. The joint headstone for Donald and Vernice has "James" for the surname, and no provision was made in the inscriptions for any subsequent marriage by Vernice for another married surname. > Vernice was later married to Rev Jasper Emory Smith, 1891-1991, on May 2, 1985 in Iowa. Rev Jasper Emory Smith is buried in English River Church of the Brethren Cemetery at South English, Keokuk County, Iowa. He is buried with his first wife, Ora Mae Miller, 1891-1979. Although Vernice evidently, per her obituary, died and was buried using both married surnames, separated by a "-", currently revised F/A/G guidelines now restrict the married surname for women to be only that which is used on the headstone inscription, regardless of any other legal use of two married surnames separated by a hyphen. As a result of an edit request on June 14, 2917, this memorial is being changed from the married surname "James-Smith" to just "James". Doing so does not necessarily respect the wishes of the deceased, but now this memorial conforms to newly revised F/A/G guidelines that were not in place when this memorial was originally entered. rkt/June 15, 2017 ----------------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday, April 8, 1998 Vernice JAMES-SMITH Vernice Pearl JAMES-SMITH, a resident of Long Term Care Unit at Jefferson County Hospital, died at 7:30p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 1998. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brethren Cemetery northwest of Libertyville with the Rev. Gordon Oliver officiating. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. at Behner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Bretren or the donor's choice. Mrs. JAMES-SMITH was born April 4, 1904, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Dan and Margaret RODIBAUGH PEEBLER. She married Don JAMES in 1928. He died in 1982. She married Jasper SMITH (sic. Rev Jasper Emory Smith). He also died. She lived in Fairfield for 20 years. She previously lived in rural Batavia. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Brethren. Survivors include one sister Vernie DAVIS of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; and one brother Ellis PEEBLER.
