On August 4, 1933, she was united in marriage with Walter R. Johnston at Marengo. They lived and farmed in Poweshiek County. She enjoyed her family and took special pride in her grandchildren. Johnston, 76, of Montezuma, died March 30, 1987 at the Senior Home in Montezuma. She was born in Madison Township near Brooklyn, Dec. 1, 1910, the daughter of Fred and Margaret O'Hara Davis. She was graduated from Brooklyn High School. On August 4, 1933, she was united in marriage with Walter R. Johnston at Marengo. They lived and farmed in Poweshiek County. She enjoyed her family and took special pride in her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, Jan. 13, 1977; a daughter, Donna Rae; and one brother, Smith Davis. Vernice is survived by one son and his wife, Edwin and Beth Johnston of Grinnell; two daughters and their husbands: Phyllis and Gary Thompson and Janet and Allen Thompson all of Montezuma; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Leona Popejoy of Flippen, Ark. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 2, at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Church of Montezuma, Ia. Officiating was Rev. William Lawson, Northside Friends Church of Grinnell, Iowa.
