Vernita Irene Wegner Thompson Jennings was born in Smithfield Township, near Arlington, on December 26, 1919, the daughter of Emil and Martha (Wolfe) Wegner. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1937. She lived with her Aunt Lena in Oelwein while going to Business School graduating with honors. While working in Oelwein she met John Thompson. They were married February 12, 1942. They eventually settled on a farm near Arlington. She and John were members of St.John's Lutheran Church where Vernita was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. She served as a delegate for the Women of the Church, traveling to San Antonio for a convention. When John's health became a challenge, they took a wonderful trip to Hawaii. It was a joy to leave the farm for more than one day. John died April 7, 1970, and her son, Bill, took over the farm. Vernita moved to Arlington and went to work at the Arlington State Bank. On March 1, 1984, Vernita married Max Jennings. They lived in Oelwein and traveled to south Texas for the winters. Later they moved to the Gernand Center in Strawberry Point. Max died December 6, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Thompson Doyle of Magnolia, TX, her son, William "Bill" Thompson (Jane) of Arlington, IA., granddaughters Jennifer Pocurull (Dr. R. Pocurull) of College Station, TX., Lori Sellers of Magnolia, TX., Merinda Struthers (Chad) of Colo, Ia., Lydia Connelly (Camron) of North Liberty, IA., Elizabeth McIntyre of Vinton, IA., and Emily Thompson of Wellington, CO. Great Grandchildren Diego & Mario Pocurull, Luke Sellers, Addison and Brantley Connelly, Hailee & Hali McIntyre, Caden & Rylee Struthers, Peyton Harvey and two step grandchildren, Kim Bacon and family of Thornton, CO., and Cinci Brinkman of Moscow, ID. She is also survived by Max's family, Terri Jennings and family of Sedalia MO., Tom Jennings and family of Colorado Springs, CO. and sisters Dorothy Bright (Gene) of Waterloo, Frances Carr (Bill) of Citrus Springs, FL., and sister-in-law Isabel Wegner of Des Moines, IA., as well as many nieces and nephews, and loved ones. She was preceded in death by husbands, John Thompson and Max Jennings, her parents, brothers and sisters, Berdinia, Delbert, Esther, Theodore, Alfred, Julius, John, and Otto; daughter-in-law, Verla, grandson-in-law, Jay McIntyre, and step-son Bob Jennings.
