A private committal service took place at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Mr. Burkhart died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. He was 93. He was born April 18, 1915 on a farm near Washtucna, Wash., the son of Archie and Nellie (Davidson) Burkhart. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Schafer, on Sept. 24, 1935 in Reardan, Wash., a marriage lasting over 73 years. Throughout his life, he owned new and used automobile dealerships in Spokane and Ritzville, Wash., Portland and McMinnville, where he had Burkhart Pontiac-Cadillac and Burkhart Motors. He retired at age 85. He enjoyed golf, bowling, pingpong, pool, hunting, fishing and flying his airplane. His family said he was known for his keen sense of humor and to their joy, he committed his life to Christ in the mid-1930s, re-dedicating his faith several years later. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in McMinnville and attended the First Reformed Church in Oak Harbor. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Marilyn VanDerWerff of Oak Harbor; Janette Mills of Chandler, Ariz. and Joanne Cole of Tempe, Ariz; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a niece and several grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Reformed Church, 250 S.W. Third Ave., Oak Harbor, WA 98277 in support of students attending Western Theological Seminary in Holland Michigan or Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Whidbey Memorial Funeral and Cremation Service in Oak Harbor.
