Dovel, Fire Chief since 1947 and one of the town's most prominent and well beloved citizens. He passed away Wednesday evening at the Page Memorial Hospital after a long illness which began in the early spring. He was 49 years, eight months and 29 days old. Last rites have been set for Friday afternoon at 4:00 p. m. at the late home on West Main Street near the Luray Caverns. Rev. T. Lee Richardson will officiate. The Luray Fire Department will act as active and honorary pallbearers. While Mr. Dovel's identity with the Luray Fire Department made him most prominent in the community, he was well known for his genial disposition and unselfish endeavors in behalf of others. He held deep se convictions and prosecuted them with great vigor, nevertheless, he was able to hold a host of friends and commanded the respect of all who knew him. He proved to be one of Luray's most able leaders in the Fire Department and was rewarded with the highest office in this organization in 1947. He was assistant chief for 15 years preceding. His able tenure in this office will do down in the history of the Fire Company as an inspiration to those who will follow him. Mr. Dovel's community life was largely centered in the Fire Department which he joined in 1920. The success and growth of the Fire Department since that time has been largely due to his loyalty enthusiasm and energetic work. He assumed much of the burden in putting on two State Conventions in Luray and undertaking many other activities which has made the Luray Company one of the best organized and effective in the Commonwealth. He was a member of the championship Luray reel teams and it is said that he never missed a state convention since he joined the Luray Company. Certain is was that he never missed doing his part in fighting a fire wherever the company might be called. He was always one of the first firemen to respond to the call and took great pride in steering the big fire trucks as well as keeping them in the finest condition. As a business man he made an outstanding success. He founded the Hawksbill Hatchery which flourished under his management and is now one of Luray's best known firms. He was a member of the Luray Lions Club and was president of the I. N. Dovel Corp. He was also associated with the Bradley Funeral Home, serving as an assistant director. His fatal illness began in the early spring and in spite of the finest medical attention could not be arrested. He spend much of his time during this period in the hospital, but maintained an attitude of cheer whenever he was able to mix with his friends. Until recently he was able to be about and spend considerable time at his business. In recent weeks, however, he took a sudden turn for the worse which ended in his untimely death. Vernon Daily Dovel was born March 27th, 1902 the son of the late I. Newton Dovel and Mrs. Blanche Freeze Dovel, who survives. On Dec. 22nd, 1924 he married Miss Ann Lautherbach, of Richmond, who survives with one son, Vernon D. Dovel Jr. and two grandchildren. Surviving brothers and I. Randolph, Leo, John and J. Newton all of Luray. One sister, Mrs. Edna West resides in Arlington. A sister, Flora and a brother, Thomas Hudson are deceased as are several other brothers and sisters who died in infancy.
