He was raised and educated in the Gilman and Newburg areas. He was a 1943 graduate of the Newburg High School. Dewey was enlisted into the second World War in 1944. He served with the 124th Army Infantry, where he earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Bronze Star Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1946, in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. Dewey attended Drake University and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. Following his education, he was employed with the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor. He was a dedicated employee with the IRS for much of his life. Dewey loved to play checkers and chess. He took his checkers playing talent to the Iowa State Fair to compete with many people across the State of Iowa. Dewey was a hard-worker. His family reflected on the times when he was a young boy working with his father on the farm who could shell 1,000 bushels of corn per hour. He was an avid reader who would venture to the public library every morning to read the daily newspaper. He enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Dewey is survived by his sisters, Joyce (Donald) Humphrey of Kellogg, Doris Logsdon of Sioux City, Iowa, and Darlene Clark of Grand Island, Nebraska; and his several nieces and nephews. Dewey died on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport. He was seventy-eight years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Derald.
