Mass of Christian Burial begins at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery. The family will be present for visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, January 16 at George Boom Funeral home in Sioux Falls with a Liturgical Wake service beginning at 7:00 PM. Berg, age 83, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2012. Vernon was born July 25th, 1928 in De Smet SD to Myrtle and John Berg. He attended country schools and graduated from Beaver Creek High School. During high school and after graduation he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He helped as a timekeeper at basketball games for Cathedral and O'Gorman High School. Vernon met Evelyn Neises in 1948 at a dance in Valley Springs. They were married on June 15, 1950, in Howard, SD. Vernon and Evelyn lived in Sioux Falls after they were married where Vernon began employment for John Morrell. They moved to Seattle Washington after 6 months where he worked for Boeing. They lived in Seattle for 1 ½ years before moving back to Sioux Falls. Vernon returned to employment at John Morrell where he continued until his retirement in 1982. In 1961 Vernon and Evelyn bought a farm north of Renner and while living there added 4 buildings. Vernon and his 6 sons raised about every type of animal and bird on this farm along with hay and crops. The family always had a very large garden in which Vernon enjoyed to tend to and he would give his produce away to people that would stop by. Vernon loved to make things and he could figure almost anything out or engineer a solution to a problem. Vernon loved to hunt, trap, and fish. He spent many days hunting and fishing with family and friends. Vernon was an elk and deer hunter and had a knack for being in the right spot at the right time and was an excellent shot. Vernon shot 3 elk in hunts in the Black Hills and Colorado. He enjoyed going goose hunting, and he was always able to bring down more geese than anyone else. Vernon made every possible effort to see all his son's and grandchildren's sporting events and drove thousands of miles over the years to attend them. He so looked forward to whenever one of them was going to compete. Vernon was an usher at St. Joseph Cathedral for 40 years. Vernon had a favorite pastime of telling stories about hunting, fishing, and to talk about his grandchildren. Last summer Vernon and Evelyn took their dream trip to Alaska. Grateful for having shared his life, his love of his life, Evelyn of rural Baltic; his sons Mike (Rochelle); Spearfish; Tom (Rita), Baltic; Dave (Robin), Savage, MN; Jeff (Joan), Sioux Falls; and Bob, Sioux Falls; and his grandchildren Heather, Trisha, Emily, Gwynne, Lacey; Jessica , Kevin, Erin, Phillip, Andrew, Austin, Crystal, and Haley; great-grand daughter Aster; brother Ole of the Philippines. Vernon was preceded in death by his son, Ron, and 10 brothers and sisters.
