Description	:	Funeral services for Vernon Davolt will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield with the Rev. Ken Livingston presiding. Interment with Veterans Honors by Harlow Ray Massee Post 277 American Legion will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield. Vernon Edward Davolt passed on to his heavenly home Feb. 27, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, at 96 years of age. Vernon was the child of Henry and Julia (Nolte) Davolt. He was born January 22, 1916, in Sheffield in the home in which lived his entire life. Vernon graduated in 1934 from Sheffield High School. He began working in the carpentry business with his father. On June 12, 1938, he brought his bride, Dorothy Oehlert, from across the block to their home at 459 North Third Street, Sheffield. There they raised four children, Karen, Janice, Douglas and Terri. At 28 years of age Vernon served our country in WWII in Italy in the U.S. Army. He took over his father's carpentry business and operated Davolt Carpenter Shop, building and remodeling many homes in the North Iowa area. Vernon was an avid sports fan, cheering on his children and grandchildren and generations of kids passing through SCMT and West Fork Schools. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. Vernon loved youth baseball, coaching Little League teams and keeping up the "Davolt Lot" for kids' pickup ballgames. Vernon's passions included model railroading, raising pigeons, his dogs, fish and various motorized conveyances he configured or purchased over the years. He enjoyed taking his kids to the dirt track races in Belmond and has passed that love of racing on to the fourth generation. Vernon was a loving husband to his bride, Dorothy, having celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last June. They attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sheffield and then the First Grace Baptist Church also in Sheffield. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Gary, at birth, and a brother at birth. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Karen (Ray) Doshier, Janice (Terry) Christensen and Terri (Mick) Pals; son, Doug (Sue) Davolt; grandchildren, Dana (April) Floyd, Michelle (Barry) Herring, Tracie (Steve) VandenBerg, David (Lindy) Christensen, Elizabeth Bouge, Chase, Jordan and Logan Pals; great-grandchildren, Kali and Rhiannon Floyd, Dustin and Nicholas Wood, Shelby, Brady and Kale Christensen, Joshua, Brian and Seth VandenBerg, Austin and Emma Jo Bouge and Ryder Ditsworth.
