Foster, 77, a developer of apartment and condominium projects in the Winston-Salem area and the Southeast, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes County, the son of the late William Doughton and Mamie Crane Foster, and moved to Germanton with his parents in 1946. Read More	BERMUDA RUN - Vernon G. Foster, 77, a developer of apartment and condominium projects in the Winston-Salem area and the Southeast, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes County, the son of the late William Doughton and Mamie Crane Foster, and moved to Germanton with his parents in 1946. After graduating from Germanton High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Returning home, he worked for Western Electric in Winston-Salem and was also introduced to construction by wiring new homes at night. Mr. Foster left Western Electric in the early 1960s and with his brother, Ocie, began building houses, including the Quail Hollow development in Kernersville. In 1972 he started his apartment- and condo-development career, first creating Grosvenor Square in Kernersville. Throughout the next two decades, he developed more than 2,000 units in nine complexes in Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Durham and Myrtle Beach and also condo projects on Emerald Isle and in Sebastian, Fla. His family remembers him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, who always worked hard and tried to do the right thing. His Pomeranian, Prince, was truly his faithful companion. He also was an avid and very skilled private pilot and loved flying his twin-engine Beechcraft Baron. He lived on Bartram Place in Winston-Salem in the 1970s and later moved to Bermuda Run. He is survived by his wife, Janice Bodsford Foster; two sons, R. Mark Foster and wife, Stephanie, of Tupelo, Miss., and W. Craig Foster and wife, Cissy, of Myrtle Beach; his sons' mother, the former Jean Williams of Shelby; a brother, Arlie O. Foster of Bermuda Village; two sisters, Juanita Smith and husband, Carl, of Bermuda Run, and Mrs. Billie Kern of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren, Israel, Noah and Sloane of Tupelo, and Abbie, Reid, Jack and Zachary of Myrtle Beach. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, A.G. Foster and Ocie C. Foster, and a sister, Madeline E. Foster. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel, with the Rev. Sylvia Wilhelm officiating. There will be a private graveside service after the funeral, with a VFW honor guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, where Mr. Foster and his wife have been permanent sponsors of five children.
