Description	:	Vernon Wobig died on Sun, Apr 3, 2016, at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 97. He was born on Jan 17, 1919, on a farm nine miles northwest of Salem, SD, to W. C. Read More	Vernon Wobig died on Sun, Apr 3, 2016, at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 97. He was born on Jan 17, 1919, on a farm nine miles northwest of Salem, SD, to W. C. Wobig and Jennie C. (Fluth) Wobig. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores in 2000, and his parents. He attended grade school near his home and graduated from Spencer High School in 1937. He farmed with his Dad for four years and then was drafted into the US Army in the first draft from McCook County. He served four years in WWII, three of which were in the Pacific Ocean theater of operations on about 10 different islands. He never received a furlough during the entire four years. Upon returning home, he again farmed with his Dad. On Nov 26, 1947, he was united in marriage to Delores Nielson of Montrose, SD. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Maxine (Harvey) Herr of Sioux Falls, Nyla Wobig (Samuel Green) of Des Moines, IA, Muriel (Randall) Austad of Aurora, CO and Bruce (Lynn) Wobig of Sioux Falls. They farmed in the Salem area until 1969 when they moved to Sioux Falls after a tornado destroyed the farm on which they were living. Vernon worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital for 19 years and held several other part time jobs, including 12 years at the Empire HyVee and 14 years at the Medical Arts Center. Following his wife's passing, he remained in their home for five years and moved into Trail Ridge Retirement Community where his hobbies were putting jig-saw puzzles together, playing traindominos and scrabble. He had 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He leaves to mourn his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, a sister: Phyllis Slattery of St. Louis Park, MN, and brother Clifford (Donna) Wobig of Ames, IA, and many in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm Wed, Ap 6, 2016, at Central Baptist Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. The family wishes that memorials be directed to Central Baptist Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
