Jenner, 85, Ashley, died April 20, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 23, at Ashley Baptist Church with the Rev. Darwin Stahl officiating. Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery. Vernon L. Jenner, the son of Fred and Anna (Bertsch) Jenner, was born Dec. 3, 1924, near Ashley in McPherson County, S.D. He attended country school close to the farm on which he was raised. He graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1942. He taught country school for two years. He then attended the School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, and became co-owner and auctioneer of the Ashley Sales Barn. Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Luebeck, on Nov. 10, 1946, at Ashley Baptist Church. They made their home on the Jenner family farm, homesteaded by Vernon's grandfather in 1887. They built a new home on the farm in 1958. Together, they raised cattle and sheep and farmed acreage while Vernon traveled to Rice Lake, Wis., purchasing and selling young dairy calves as a second income. In 1975, Vernon and Ruth built a new home in Ashley and this became their home for the next 30 years. Their son, David, and his wife, Deborah, moved onto the farmstead and Vernon and David continued to farm together for 15 years. During Vernon's later retirement years, the family farm continued to be his primary hobby and interest. Vernon and Ruth enjoyed 63 years of marriage, during which they spent much time traveling across the U.S. and Europe. They raised three children, all who raised families and live in North Dakota. Vernon's children and grandchildren remained an integral part of his life. He spent many hours visiting his children and grandchildren and attending activities related to their lives. He was known for his musical abilities, both vocal and instrumental. Together, Vernon and Ruth spent much time sharing their music talents in their church and community. He sang with the Aberdeen Elks Chorus for 15 years and traveled with chorus members to four Elks National Conventions. In 1994, Vernon joined the chorus in singing the national anthem at a Chicago White Sox versus Milwaukee Brewers game at Comiskey Baseball Park in Chicago. Another of Vernon's accomplishments was the development and maintaining of the Ashley Centennial Park. He spent much of his time during a 17-year span taking care of this haven. Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; his son, David (Deborah) Jenner, Ashley; two daughters, Judith Maier, West Fargo, and Rhoda (Kim) Young, LaMoure; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, LaVerne (Elmer) Diede and Elvera Richardson, both of Jamestown, and Frances (Milbert) Schick, Eureka, S.D. His parents and one infant sister, Esther, preceded him in death.
