Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery east of Pierce. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Home for Funerals. Mr. Uttecht died Friday, December 30, 2016, at the Norfolk Veteran’s Home. Shorty was born on October 23, 1921, in Pierce County, the son of Arnold and Alvina (Pittack) Uttecht. He was raised on the family farm near Wee Town, NE. He was baptized at Zion East at Hoskins. He was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Pierce. Shorty attended rural school. He entered the US Army in November 1942. He served in the 713th Armored Flame Thrower Battalion in Okinawa. Shorty earned his honorable discharge in January 1946. On April 6, 1943, Shorty married Edna Zierke at Zion Lutheran Church in Pierce. Shorty was overseas serving his country when his first son was born. Following Shorty’s service in the Army, they made their home in Norfolk. Shorty was employed by the City of Norfolk as a mechanic. He was the owner of the Uttecht Standard Station which was located on the southeast corner of First and Norfolk Avenue. Later, he owned and operated Uttecht Tree Service. After selling the tree service business, Shorty returned to work for the city as a mechanic. Shorty was life member of American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 1644. He was a past Commander for the American Legion Post 16. He was long time member of Mount Oliver Lutheran Church where he served as trustee. One of his hobbies was building four houses. He enjoyed bowling and sponsored several teams. Shorty was a pitcher and second baseman on several softball teams until he turned 48. He loved to fish, hunt and camp. He loved playing cards with his friends at the Norfolk Veteran’s Home. Shorty is survived by his wife; children and their spouses, Marilyn and Oscar Stromberg, of Norfolk and Randy and Tammy Uttecht, of Pierce; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; his sister, Leila Lienemann, of Denver, and a brother, Lyle Uttecht, of Lincoln.
