Description	:	Vernon Stockdale, age 83, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of William and Irene (Scourick) Stockdale on May 23, 1930, near Austinville, Iowa. He attended Austinville School and Aplington High School graduating in 1948, where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He always remembered Miss Martin and his penmanship was her product. On June 26, 1949, Vernon was united in marriage with Carlene Jean Allan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed on the family farm and raised fat cattle since 1950. To this union three children, Alan, Mary and Keith were born. Vernon was a member of First Reformed Church in Aplington and a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, where he had served on Board of Trustees, helped construct the church in 1959 and was a member of the church Mariners with Carlene. He had served on the Austinville School Board, Hawkeye Bank Board for 20 years, was a member of Butler County Cattlemen, served on Butler County Zoning Commission and was also a 4-H Leader for many years. Vernon and Carlene had fun traveling over the years to Florida, Arizona and Texas, as well as many trips to South and North Dakota and Montana on cattle buying trips. He always enjoyed looking at the country side and admiring quality livestock and crop fields. He very much loved riding in his gator and helping around the farm. His most enjoyable times were spent with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Vernon died Friday, November 1, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Harold Stockdale. Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carlene Stockdale of Aplington; three children, Alan (Lou) Stockdale of Parkersburg, Mary (Kurt) Ibeling of Slater, and Keith (Gretchen) Stockdale of Aplington; seven grandsons and two granddaughters; eight great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; and one brother, Marvin (Anita) Stockdale of Spirit Lake. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the First Reformed Church, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
