Born March 23, 1927, on a farm near Sac City, Iowa, Vernus Dean Wunschel was the youngest of three sons born to Louis and Marie (Nuntzman) Wunschel. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Vernus grew up and received his education at Schaller, Iowa. His first job was as a mechanic at Rex Chevrolet in Odebolt, Iowa. He also worked at Scholes Hardware Store in Arthur, Iowa, as a plumber and electrician. Utilizing his strong knowledge of mechanics, Vernus built a filling station and garage in Arthur. He later purchased an auto dealership in Battle Creek, Iowa, and expanded to Ida Grove. Vernus could never be without a building project. He constructed warehouses for Walnut Grove in surrounding states and then built telephone dial buildings for Central Telephone Company around Iowa. He owned and operated Wunschel Oil Company for over 50 years. Vernus joined the Arthur Fire Department in 1949, and in 1957, joined the Battle Creek Fire Department, where he remained active until recently. He also served on the Ida Grove Fire Department for over 30 years, and was instrumental in the construction of the present fire station. While serving Battle Creek, Vernus began the yearly "Stag Night" fundraising tradition, which he brought with him to Ida Grove and continues in both communities to this day. His life was spent serving and helping others. When Vernus retired in 2006, three generations of Wunschels were active firefighters on the Ida Grove Fire Department. On May 11, 1948, Vernus eloped with Jacquelyn "Jackie" Scholes to Kansas City, Mo. Four children, Don, Vern, Jean and Mark, were born to this union. Vernus loved to have his family around him. He also enjoyed water sports and playing cards as a family. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Survivors include his wife, Jackie; four children, Don (Peggy) Wunschel, Vern (Jan) Wunschel, Jean Friedrichsen and special friend, Charlie Rohlf and Mark (Theresa) Wunschel; 12 grandchildren, Kriss (Pat) Phillips, Matt (Chris) Wunschel, Donavon (Chris) Wunschel, Aaron Wunschel, Amber (Jed) Swanger, Adam (Sarah) Wunschel, Cole Wunschel, Andi (John) O'Connor, Brandi (Chad) Sharkey, Danny Wunschel, Aaron Mahr and Sarah Mahr; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur and Delbert Wunschel; his parents-in-law, Paul and Nellie Scholes; and a son-in-law, Mark Friedrichsen.
