Vicky Hatcher Kimball, 30, of Creston, died March 2 at 2:40 a.m. at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Her husband, Daniel D. Kimball, 40, is charged in her murder. "We've dealt with Kimball many times on domestic abuse calls with his first wife," said Creston Police Sgt. Bill Heatherington. "This is nothing new to him at all." Heatherington said six officers responded to a domestic abuse call at the Kimball house about 11:35 p.m. March 1. Apparently friends had stopped by the house and either called police from a neighbor's house or had asked the neighbors to call police, Union County Attorney Timothy R. Kenyon said. "Kimball was present and witnesses observed him grasping her," Kenyon said. When officers arrived within a few moments, Kimball was not there. Police found him a short time later hiding under a pile of clothes in the back seat of a car parked in the garage. "We read him his rights and he had no response," Heatherington said. When Kimball was served with a search warrant so officers could take samples of his skin, hair, blood and urine, he complained to officers. He told them, "You're treating me like a criminal," Heatherington said. Vicky Hatcher Kimball was found in an unconscious and semi-comatose state, Heatherington said. "She quit breathing once or twice and was revived by officers," he said. She was taken to Greater Community Hospital in Creston where she was treated by Dr. Chuck Hoyt until a helicopter arrived to fly her to Des Moines, Heatherington said. Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Francis Garrity said the cause of death was "cranio Cerebrian trauma, or head injury by homicide." Heatherington said Kimball had been in prison for domestic and sexual abuse committed against his first wife in 1992. Kimball was charged with domestic abuse against Vicky Hatcher Kimball in the fall of 1994 resulting from a fight in a parking lot, Kenyon said. "They both appeared before a judge and she requested the case be dismissed," Kenyon said. The case was set for review and the two were in counseling, he said. Vicky Hatcher Kimball was born in Council Bluffs where she lived most of her life. She and Daniel Kimball were married June 6, 1994 in Bayliss Park and moved to Creston in September 1994. Kimball's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 10. Bond has been set at $250,000. OBITUARY FROM NONPARIEL: Vicky Lynn Hatcher Kimball, 30, of Creston, died March 2 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Hatcher Kimball was born in Council Bluffs where she lived most of her life. She worked as a machine operator for Blue Star Foods/ConAgra and was a member of Central Congregation, Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Council Bluffs. Survivors include her husband, Daniel, of Creston; father, Elwood E. Hatcher of Council Bluffs; two sisters, Debra Loper of Aurora, Colo., and Rose McCormick of Crescent; three brothers, Steve Hatcher of Whitefield, Colo., Michael Hatcher of Glenwood and Robert Hatcher of Omaha; aunts; uncles; and cousins. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Meyer Funeral Home with Senior Elder Bob Watkins officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Sunday between 3 and 4 p.m.
