Victor Andrew Bartsch was born Dec. 17, 1924 in Esmond to Sebastian and Maria Wiest Bartsch. He attended school in East Fork Township of Benson County and graduated from Esmond High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Army in November of 1944 at Frot Snelling, Minn. He served with the 34th Medical Depot Company as a clerk in the South Philippines. He received the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asian Pacific Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged Dec. 6, 1946. He returned to the Esmond area and took over the family farm. He married Marion Richter Oct. 30, 1950 in Selz. He worked part-time at the CR Lounge in Esmond and the Veterans Club and the Eagles Club in Harvey. He retired from farming in 1993 and they moved to Harvey in 1995. He was a township supervisor for more than 25 years. He enjoyed reading and playing cards and was an avid bowler. He also enjoyed watching sports on television, especially when the Packers or Yankees played. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marilyn Wurgler of Watford City; three sons, James and his special friend Cary of Harvey, Ronald and Julie Bartsch of Bismarck and Kevin and Paula Bartrsch of Casselton; a brother, Mike (Frances) Bartsch of Chateau, Mont.; and a sister, Mary (Kermit) Wells of Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; six grandchildren; five sisters, Kate Leier, Lena Leier, Helen Wagner and infants Amelia and Christine; five brothers, Sebastian, Antone, Albert, George and a toddler George; a granddaughter, Jessica Wurgler; and a great-granddaughter, Samantha Wurgler.
